How I Helped Clean Up The Gulf Oil Spill
When we heard the news about the oil rig explosion that started this tragedy few of us realized how much the Gulf would be impacted. But it didn't take long for the pictures and video to start coming in. The shorelines fouled, the helpless pelicans mired in the oil.
I was angry and frustrated about what had happened. Was BP at fault? Was it just an accident? I really didn't want to get caught up with being angry and trying to lay blame because, regardless of who is at fault, we all have to deal with the consequences of this disaster.
Many people that live and work in the Gulf region have had their lives turned upside down by this. The beaches are fouled and need to be cleaned. Area wildlife needs our help and the pelicans seem particularly hard hit.
But how can I help with the Gulf clean up and recovery efforts? Even if it were practical for me to do so, I can't go down there and put on my hip waders and start sopping up crude oil along the shoreline. BP has a tight control on the clean up efforts and understandably so. But there are many quality charity organizations that are doing good work in the Gulf.
I remembered reading an article about the outstanding work that Tri-State Bird Rescue and Research was doing and it got me to thinking that doing something to help Tri-State (tristatebird.org) might be one way I could help. I would raise money for Tri-State. But how?
Then this idea popped into my head. I could fashion and sell a vial necklace that would contain a minute amount of the actual oil retrieved from the Gulf. Although it would be a symbolic gesture, people would feel a part of the cleanup, and know that some of their money was going to a good cause. They would actually have some of that oil out of the gulf and in their necklace. You get to display it on a necklace and show people that you did something to make a difference.
A good idea perhaps but I had no way of getting any oil from the Gulf so I dismissed the idea. But by stroke of luck, my idea became possible. I was telling a business friend of mine about the idea and to my shock and amazement he told me he knew someone working in the Gulf region and that he could get me some of the crude oil from the spill.
So I was on my way, and began making the vial necklaces. Now I have added t-shirts that contain a small amount of the Gulf oil actually mixed in with the ink. The idea took off and now we have products that I offer deal directly with cleaning up the Gulf, and every purchase you make helps fund that effort. The reclaimed oil used in the vials and mixed into the ink to print the t-shirts—although symbolic in amount—isn't in the Gulf anymore and that's a good thing! And by wearing these necklaces and t-shirts you show that you're doing your part to help out.
The symbolism aside, the real help exists in the $5 donation I'll make for every purchase to either Tri-State Bird Rescue and Research, National Wildlife Federation or the National Audubon Society. Where can I print out coupons for the Audubon Zoo in New Orleans?
When I lived in New Orleans 2 for 1 coupons were so easy to find in the paper, but I'm living in Baton Rouge now since Katrina and I want to take my niece to the zoo back home on Friday.
There don't appear to be any coupons for the zoo on the newspaper's website (www.nola.com).
The Times-Picayune is sold in Baton Rouge, at news stands and I know they are at the IHOP on Seigen.
