The birds nest comes from Swiftlets, who build their nests in caves high up on cliff sights, in Asia. The nests are built during the breeding season by the Swiftlet over a period of 35 days. The size of the nests is small, around the size of your palm and this is the reason for the high cost. Harvesting the nests is dangerous as it requires climbing up the cliff side to get into the caves. These days, in order to capitalize on the Birds Nest trade, many people are opening the upper floors of their shop lots and allowing the birds to nest.

How long after hatching, do mothers and the baby birds leave their nest?
I had a mother bird nesting with 3 eggs in a tree in my backyard. After 7 days after the eggs hatched, the birds left. Is this natural, or could it be a result of me giving the nest too much attention?
If you were visiting the nest often, you may have attracted a predator to it and it came and ate the chicks. 7 days is WAY too early for the babies to have left the nest. Most species leave at around 12-14 days, some 1 day more or less. In the future if you have a nest in your yard and want to check on it..you should watch for any avian predators (jays, crows, ravens, magpies, mockingbirds, raptors) or mammalian predators (even domesticated animals) BEFORE you approach the nest. You should not check on it everyday..keep your visits down to a minimum and make them quick. I would not check anymore than every 3-4 days...anymore that that can cause the nest to fail. Also, the parents consider YOU a predator and they could abandon the nest if they feel you are visiting too much.
