Cambridge Guest Houses
Cambridge guest houses are just the places to stay if you fancy lazing in a boat on a shallow river on a summer’s day! It’s been going on there for a long time and is an established tradition in the city for visitors and students alike.
Visitors come to East Anglia from all over the world to spend a short holiday or a longer vacation to visit the colleges. It is known the world over as a centre of excellence of learning and staying at bed and breakfast accommodation is an attractive way of arranging it.
The city, with it’s winding streets, has much of the feeling of a market town, full of things to do and interesting places to see like the theatres, museums and live music venues. There are 4 theatres and 3 multi-screen cinemas here plus three concert halls where events ranging from classical music to rock concerts are frequently staged.
This is the place to see the original specimens that the young naturalist Charles Darwin brought back on HMS Beagle in 1836, or maybe you would like to see The Egyptian Galleries at the Fitzwilliam Museum in Trumpington Street (admission free). You’ll not need your bike as these are so close to each other! You may even find a guest house close by.
The Cambridge & County Folk Museum in Castle Street records the lives of the people of Cambridge and its surrounding area from 1700 onwards. You can see objects such as costumes, coins, art, hobbies, textiles and toys (don’t think you’ll need the bike for this one, either!).
It’s not a large city by any means so getting around is a doddle and there’s plenty for all the family to visit such as the historic buildings which create a sense of history and purpose.
The city is, of course, best known for it’s universities with over 30 colleges situated in the centre of the city, with a distinct green element of gardens, chapels and bridges over the River Cam.
If you stay at a bed and breakfast house or inn, you can easily hire a bicycle to explore the cobbled streets and shopping areas including book shops. You will not be alone because cycling is the preferred mode of transport of many of the local residents! Other activities include swimming in the very long pool at Jesus Green (the longest in the country) or you may fancy tennis at an outside court in a public park, ideal for a picnic.
The forty acre Cambridge University Botanic Garden has tropical glasshouses and a garden with a lake and loads of plants and it’s close to the city centre, so you may not need your bike again; leave it at your guest house!
If all that cycling is likely to make you feel hungry, there is no shortage of places to eat in the City for there are plenty of Restaurants, Cafes, Bars, Fast Food etc to keep the wolf from the door and then, of course, there are the pubs, too. You can eat ‘American’ to ‘Vietnamese’ style, the choice is yours. It’s often possible to arrange an evening meal with the host at your bed and breakfast.
If you want to travel outside the City you can easily travel by train or hire a car to spend a day out at one of the county’s stately homes or gardens. The ‘must do’ list could contain the City of Ely for it’s Cathedral or Oliver Cromwell’s House and the Flag Fen Bronze Age Centre to see The Bronze-Age roundhouse as in use around 250BC.
Come to think of it, if you walk around the city and use the train or car for longer journeys, you probably won’t need to hire a bike at bike at all!!

The students here take various subjects withinb their Rowing degree - Theory of Rowing, Rowing Science, History of Rowing, and of course the practical aspect, all of which culminates in a final exam which you probably saw broadcast on the TV today. The winners get the First Class hons degree, and the losers the Second Class hons.
