In this world you can get bad shaving brushes, okay shaving brushes, good shaving brushes and then there’s Simpsons shaving brushes who are without parallel and made to a quality no other manufacturer of badger hair shaving brushes comes close too, we are talking pure shaving luxury. They of course have a price to match, but as with so many things you get what you pay for.
Simpsons is a company which dates back a 100 years so when you buy one you are buying a brush with a long pedigree. Until recently they were based rather suitably among the gentry of Somerset, about a year ago however following a change of ownership they moved to the Isle of Man, crucially the new owners are sticking to the artisan method of manufacture which makes these brushes so special. Every brush is individually turned on a lathe before being filled by hand with a fine quality knot of Chinese badger hair. Each knot is sorted weighed and tied by skilled craftsmen before carefully being cemented into the handle. The supplier of the actual Chinese badger hair is incidentally a London firm whose origins date back to the sixteenth century.
You can tell the high quality of the craftsmanship when you squeeze the hair just above the handle, Simpson don’t pack the hairs with a cork of cement to create the impression of a bushy brush as many other companies do so you can feel the quality and density of the hair, also check out the tips of the hairs, Simpsons make the knot by hand this means they don’t have to trim the brushes into shape once its been placed in the handle, this leaves the tips naturally soft on your face.
In the shaving brush industry there is no standard that producers have to adhere to when grading the badger hair they use, one company may call the hair on their brushes silver tip where as another company might term a similar quality of hair just as pure badger, some even dye the hair to make it look like it has a silver tip. Fortunately however, although there is no consistency across the industry most or the well known manufactures are consistent across their brand and you can generally tell the quality of a brush by the brands reputation. Simpsons as you would expect use the finest types of badgers’ hair and settle for nothing but the best. They have two basic types; best badger hair and super badger hair, their best badger hair is what lesser manufactures would call silver tip, the super badger hair is the hair taken from the neck of the badger, this is the area which provides the hair with the best qualities a shaving brush needs, it will be able to adsorb lots of water to whip up the best cream your shaving soap or cream can provide, the hair is also soft on your skin while stiff enough to lift your stubble. In addition to this you can ask your retailer how many colour bands the hair on the brushes they have in stock have, a two band shaving brush will be slightly stiffer than a three band and this way you can fine tune the perfect brush for your requirements.

Is there any difference between Japanese and Chinese calligraphy brushes and ink?
Also, why is it advised to use dry ink instead of bottled ink (liquid)?
I believe that there are slight differences, but nothing a novice would notice. I use both Chinese and Japanese brushes. Bottled ink has more glue in it and so it will tend to clog up the inkstone, but if you use dry ink, it takes over an hour to prepare the ink before you start (they say it calms the spirit to do so). At the school I attend nearly everybody uses bottled ink.
