When painting, do you need to prime the wall if the new color is much darker than the old color?
The wall is currently white; the new color is going to be a soft, warm brown. Do I need to use a primer?
I'm guessing the white is an eggshell. I'm debating between eggshell and satin for the new color...I don't want too much glare so i'm leaning toward eggshell. It's definitely not glossy.
To add to the last detail update, I've heard to stay away from flats. Does everyone agree with that? As far as the first answer, I'm most likely going with Behr. They're having a sale this weekend at Home Depot (Lowe's is having the same sale) but Behr seems to be the better of the 2 options from what I hear.
Priming is a good rule of thumb, regardless of color changes. If you really don't want to prime, I suggest using Kilz 2, at least. It will allow the new color better adhesion and you will get a better finished product. Remember that one gallon will cover 350 square feet in one coat. You may need two coats.
If the current paint on your wall is eggshell, it won't matter what the next paint sheen is if you are going to prime. Eggshell is highly scrubbable and cleanable (if you get stains, crayons, etc on it). Satin is less scrubbable but more washable than eggshell. Semigloss, of course, is the best in terms of washing off stains, but it sounds like you don't want something with a lot of shine. Eggshell is my personal favorite, especially for how it looks when it dries. Flat paint 'grabs' fingerprints, meaning you can see the fingerprint you left there on the wall. It is the most durable and most scrubbable (how much you can scrub at it until the paint itself comes off).
