Why the Chinese are trawling the UK antiques market looking for hidden treasures
In November of last year the antiques world was taken by storm when a Qianking imperial vase with a fish motif sold for £53m to an anonymous Chinese buyer. Thought to be the coup of the decade in the antiques world many thought it was a one off sale in the declining world of antiques.
However, how wrong observers were. Chinese art collectors are now coming to UK antiques market venues hoping to bag some hidden treasures. Trade across the antiques fairs and auction houses seems to be booming as these millionaire collectors search for stunning antique pieces. Regional sellers have seen a huge jump in their trade and are shocked that sales as high as this are being made.
The Chinese are scouring the whole of the UK antique markets and auction houses to try and find the valuable items that can make them huge profits. Based on this many are now looking in their chest of treasures for items including Chinese porcelain and imperial jade are the ones that hold the most value and are items that draw the most attention to new antique enthusiasts.
This demand in Chinese antiques has also increased the competition. More and more collectors from China are looking to the west for prized antiques. Chinese collectors are now beginning to look globally for their antiques and are prepared to pay whatever it takes to get the item. Chinese antique furniture is now prominently featuring at many of the well known auction houses across the UK which is great news for those that already own individual pieces of antique Chinese furniture.
It is not just the big auction houses that are seeing a boom. Many of the independent antiques market locations are also seeing a boom in trade. One of the most popular antiques fairs in the UK is the antiques market at Old Spitalfields market which is held every Thursday. Many antiques enthusiasts and dealers flock to the market in the hope of finding that one hidden treasure. Many of the stall holders have antique items such as vases, pottery, even art work hoping it will be that piece that is the big sale.
If you are an antique enthusiast or are just starting out in the world of antiques then Old Spitalfields market is probably the best place to start. With many stall holders selling an array of items you will truly gain valuable knowledge on selling and buying. You never know your trip to the antiques market may bag you a Chinese treasure.

K, so I had a wonderful idea, as I'm trying to make money without actually doing any work. I'm a fairly good photographer, people say they're at least good enough to sell as stock photos, some to hang up.
The Dairy Queen in my town has a bunch of pictures hanging on the walls by a local photographer, which gave me the idea, not to brag... but I'm better than that photographer. Anyway, I figure that I can go around and ask if the restaurants and such would like to hang my photos up on their walls, I hear people do this all the time.
There's only one gallery in my town, and it's not really for photography work, only paintings and drawings. We do have a booth in an antique mall, but it's a small thing in the back of the store, so yeah...
My question is, should I ask the store if they would like to buy the photos directly, as decor. Or should I give it to them for free, and put a price tag on the pictures just in case a customer comes along?

Fairly good won't normally cut it if you are trying to sell your work.
You can try selling direct to the store for onward sale by them. Unlikely to happen though.
You can approach stores or restaurants and ask them to give you display space - and to handle the sales (if any). For this you will have to pay them a commission.
