Fair Original

The Goose Fair factor
Come to Nottingham the first week in October and you’ll be swept along by the frenzy surrounding the annual Goose Fair. Residing at the Forest Recreation Ground since 1928 after outgrowing Old Market Square, this famous travelling fair has been rolling on for more than 700 years.
The Goose Fair was once Europe’s biggest, with records dating it back to 1284. Originally a trade and marketplace event, it’s believed to be named after the truckloads of geese brought from Lincolnshire to be sold in the city.
Indeed, the early purpose of this autumn fair was to bring exotic goods not available year-round into the city. Visitors weaved around a sprawl of makeshift stalls to browse local wares. Entertainment was also in abundance to keep the crowds browsing and buying.
During the nineteenth century, the advent of the railway meant it wasn’t such a novelty to stock up on goods from travelling merchants. But by now Goose Fair was so firmly established in the hearts of the locals there was no question it would continue. Instead, its focus shifted to merriment – still bringing something lacking in Nottingham during some difficult economic times.
Goose Fair’s first big roundabout, a hand-turned Twigden’s Riding Machine, made its debut in 1855, but it was the advent of steam and later electricity that opened the floodgates to more sophisticated attractions. These grand-scale amusements soon saw the Fair sprawl beyond the confines of Old Market Square and this, together with the growth of traffic, prompted a move to the more accommodating Forest Recreation Ground a mile away.
Over the years, Goose Fair has brought everything from the bizarre to the breathtaking. Wombwell’s travelling menagerie in 1877 showcased 57 cart horses and 7,000 birds and animals while 1888 saw aeronaut Professor Baldwin make the first parachute jump into Nottingham from a balloon over Wollaton Park. We’ve seen exhibitions of performing fleas, lion shows and mouse towns together with evermore-daring rides and amusements.
The force of Goose Fair is such that only the bubonic plague in 1646 and World Wars I and II have ever got in its way. Although there are still some signs of its ancient heritage, the Goose Fair of modern times is characterised by its 500 attractions including white-knuckle rides, family activities, traditional waltzers and carousels.
While the Fair is undoubtedly a highlight on the recreation ground’s calendar, this green space is buzzing year-round. Originally part of Sherwood Forest, you’ll find some landmarks to take you back to its early days. 1845 saw The Forest protected by the Nottingham Inclosure Act, which set aside its 80 acres for recreational use. A commemorative “Inclosure Oak” was planted by the mayor and can still be found at the Mansfield Road entrance. You’ll also see Forest Lodge, built in 1857 as a police or keeper’s lodge with its original cell still in the basement.
The Forest was the first home of Nottingham Forest Football Club in 1865 and also hosted the city’s racecourse before it moved to Colwick.
You’d never believe a bit of green space would have so much history. But attracting one of the city’s world-famous attractions, this little piece of Sherwood Forest is the stuff of legends all on its own.

How is original sin fair?
Explain to me how it is fair that someone is punished for a sin they did not commit themselves?
Explain how it is fair that the ONLY way many Christians think that you can get into heaven is to not only believe in a god, but their version.
Explain how if you are not a Christian, then it does not matter how good of a person you are.
I am not trying to be rude, but this doctrine does not makes any sense, nor does it seem fair.
Pretend for one moment that you are an atheist. Would this still make sense? I am an atheist and plenty of things in certain religions make sense to me. I can understand them, but I don't agree with them. This is not one of those things.
If you are an atheist, does this doctrine seem fair to you?
The reason why I asked the other questions is because they are related to original sin. Many people believe that Jesus enabled people to be saved from this if they are Christian.
These are great questions, I will try my best to answer them as completely as I can.
"Explain to me how it is fair that someone is punished for a sin they did not commit themselves?"
I don't understand what you are referring to here - we aren't punished for sins we don't commit. Original sin is an attitude of the heart, part of our nature that we inherit from our parents - it's in our DNA if you will... Individual sins such as lying, cheating, stealing etc. are merely symptoms of the underlying disease of Original Sin. Original sin is our predisposition to disregard God and make our own decisions without regard to the instructions of God. It is our rebellious nature that we inherit - the sins we then commit flow our of our rebellious nature, and it is those sins we committ of our own free will for which we are punished...
"Explain how it is fair that the ONLY way many Christians think that you can get into heaven is to not only believe in a god, but their version."
Jesus said the most important commandment was this: "Hear O Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is one" - meaning that there is only one God: the God of Abraham, Issac and Jacob. So you may believe in some other type of god, but if you do not trust what God has revealed about himself in the bible, through his prophets, and through his son Jesus, then you are not worshipping the true God, but a god of your own imagining. That is the sin of idolatry. The bible says that God is jealous for the worship and love of his people - he will not tolerate the worship of anything but him... Jesus said "I and the Father are one" and "No one comes to the Father except through me" - so if you have a problem with the exclusivity of Christianity, your problem is with the bible's teachings, and not with Christians per se.
"Explain how if you are not a Christian, then it does not matter how good of a person you are."
It certainly does matter - especially if you are not a Christian because you will be judged based on how you lived your life. Take a look at Revelation 22 - people who are not Chrisitan are judged based on the works or deeds that they committed during their lifetime, both good and bad. The "book of deeds" is opened, and they are called to task for even every word that they have spoken during their lives. There is another book, the book of life - your name can be recorded in this book if you admit that you have done wrong, and accept Christ's death as the payment for your sins. Then you are not judged based on your own performance, but on Jesus's - because you admit that you do not measure up to God's standards.
I hope that helps?
