Where can i get hard foam blocks for sculpture.?
Ive been looking for a rather large peice of foam (about 1' by 1' by 2') that i can use for the start of a carving, which id later reinforce with plastic and smooth and finish. Im having trouble finding anywhere that either sells foam the right size or sells it cheaply. I was originally looking at floral foam, to give an idea as to what im looking for, but the sizes are weird.
Generally people use the pink or light blue polystyrene insulation sheets for sculpture. You are not going to get them in the required size, but you can glue pieces together for the required thickness. At least the larger hardware stores will have them, but also other building suppliers.
It carves much better than the white styrofoam, though it's still a mess.
I think people use wood glue for gluing sheets together, though not quite sure. Experiment on small scraps for glues containing solvents probably melt the polystyrene, though probably less than styrofoam.
