Why French Doors Continue As A Favourite Amongst Modern UPVC Doors
It is no secret that the French know style, elegance and sophistication. French architecture, after all, is amongst the most celebrated in the world, while their contribution to the arts has been highly influential to say the least. There can be no mystery then in the fact that french doors have long been a favoured addition to a home, particularly amongst home owners with a taste for elegance and style. It is no different today, and the development of upvc doors has not succeeded in ending their reign as desirable items of luxury.
Luxury is not a stretch of the imagination when talking about such doors. They are synonymous with the concept, what with the leisure and pleasure involved in enjoying the warmth of the sun in a garden in full bloom. Just as all upvc doors, and windows for that matter, have made such luxuries more affordable, upvc french doors have allowed millions of home owners to open their livingrooms up to more daylight and provide easy access to the great outdoors.
How this love affair with such distinctive doors began is something of a history lesson. Far from being a fanciful development by a bored aristocrat, these doors have always served a definite purpose. They are linked with the Renaissance of Italy, with the French warring with their neighbours for a number of years early in the 16th century. The Italian love of light flourished in their architecture, with tall doors leading onto small balconies left open to allow the maximum amount of light into a room.
The French brought this concept back with them and as the glass industry developed in the 17th century, and glass became higher in quality and lower in price, these wooden doors, which by then were decorated with wrought iron for added strength, were imbedded with small panes of glass held in place within a grid of wooden mullions.
Their association with only the rich and successful made them much desired, while their design was as practical as it was elegant. With electricity some distance away, french doors provided the opportunity to make the most of daylight, keeping rooms illuminated until late into the evening when candle light would take over. Most significant of all was the fact that there was no need to open the door to get the sunlight, meaning daylight could be maximised even in winter.
It was a small revolution in terms of domestic change, but from it did come a better quality of home living. The symmetrical design, the simplicity of the straight, finely cut wood frames, and clarity of the glass added considerably to the aesthetics of a room. For many decades, they were a status symbol. The intricacy of the designs grew over time, with leaded glass allowing elaborate floral shapes, and biblical or family symbolism to be depicted.
Though the original materials of wood and glass are still used today, the sheer cost of solid wood frames has ensured that it alone is something of a status symbol too. However, the more affordable, though no less impressive, upvc and composite french doors has meant that a far greater number of homes have added them.
The advantages do not extend to cost only, with a higher level of durability given the resistance that both the composite and upvc frames show to the elements, and the resulting long life that they enjoy. A minimal amount of maintenance means that, unlike the original form that chipped and cracked over time if the wood was not adequately cared for, upvc french doors can be admired for decades with only a regular wipe of a cloth needed to remove dust and dirt.
Meanwhile, the modern demands of the environment means that upvc doors can insulate a home perfectly thanks to its structural attributes and its double glazing. This is, of course, in keeping with all upvc doors and windows, which meet the highest industry, environmental and manufacturing standards.
But despite such modern pressures, the simple beauty of french doors remains. They are as practical as ever in filling a room with daylight, and in opening a home out into a garden. They are also as elegant in appearance and as complementary in matching interior an exterior decor of a home as ever before. Little wonder then that their popularity has never waned.
