A Brief History of Horse Racing and the Traditionof betting
The first recorded and now legendary race took place in Ireland from Buttevant Church to St. Marys Church, Doneraile, in Cork in 1752.
The riders raced from the steeple at one church to the steeple at another church, giving rise to the term Steeple Chasing.
During the 19th Century, steeple chasing became more sophisticated with enclosed courses and professionally trained horses and the traditional amateur was unable to compete at this level.
Other attempts were made to stage races for amateurs, from which professionals were excluded. Local Hunts undertook to organise amateur races and the Atherstone Hunt was the first hunt to organise a meeting annually from 1870. This hunt still has a meeting today usually at the end of each April.
There were no accepted rules for these races until 1913, when the Master of Hounds Point to Point Association formulated a list.
In 1935, Point to Point racing was brought under the umbrella of the National Hunt Committee which runs professional jump racing, who formalised a new set of regulations which generally still stand today.
Point to pointing has often led the way for National Hunt racing to follow:
- Ladies were allowed to race against men in all races except Mens’ Opens in 1974;
- Sunday racing with betting started with point to points.
As point to point fences are six inches lower than National Hunt fences, many of the top horses like ‘Best Mate’ and ‘Denman’ began their careers in point to points. It is an invaluable training ground for young horses and riders.
Each year there is a limited number of races at National Hunt courses between February and May that are confined to point to pointers.
They differ from normal races as the horses are not handicapped by weight in order to equalize their abilities - so the best horses tend to win.
These are good betting opportunities but you need to have considerable knowledge about point to point form.

What kind of Horse do they use in English Hunting parties?
The majority of horses used in English hunting are called field hunters, and are bred for the purpose.
Other horses and ponies are also used, mostly by casual hunters and invited people who usually have no field hunter available.
The hunt is sometimes organised in two groups.
The First Field is the most direct route, involving jumps over fences and hedgerows and therefore suited to the field hunters.
The Second Field takes a longer route not usually involving jumps and so suits the other riders who have no field hunters, and with those there may be many breeds and varieties of horses and ponies.
Draft and Thoroughbred crosses are commonly used for the field hunters. Pure Thoroughbred crosses are less common but not rare.
Field hunters were developed in England after the General Enclosure Act of 1845 which enabled wealthy landowners to fence off large sections of land and to plant hedges.
In total more than four thousand separate enclosure acts were enacted by Parliament, resulting in a change of character of the English countryside from a largely free and open land and unobstructed space apart from the considerable woodland and forest , to a series of enclosed spaces.
That meant of course that hunting with horses had to change from hunting on open spaces and what was largely considered to be common land before and which was now being controlled by landowners, and so horses were bred with good jumping ability to be able to jump the fences and hedges that were becoming more common.
The same process occurred in Ireland, also a land of horses and with a gypsy population whose livelihood depended on horses and those gypsies had brought with them Mata horse stocks, some of the finest horses in Europe from the plains of Hungary and elsewhere.
Irish racing horses are well known around the world and they have won many races each year and continue to do so.
As hunters and horsemen the gypsies have a long history and great skill and the rise of foxhunting in Ireland amongst the wealthy classes led to a demand for horses capable of fulfilling their needs which the gypsy horse breeders soon did.
In England and Ireland there are now many studs for both show jumpers and field hunters as well as for racing horses.
The English countryside outside of woodland and marshes even now consists very largely of hedged fields dating from those times of enclosure as it does in Ireland away from the moors and the mountains.

Both field hunters and show jumpers stem from that change in the style of hunting and both varieties have similar qualities and sometimes share organisations in the UK as well as in the USA, though the field hunters of course need more stamina than the show jumpers.
Spanish and Hungarian horses, and Arabian breeds from which some of them came, were included in the mix that became field hunters.
Arabian horses were already present in England for hundreds of years, especially after the skirmishing between Christians and Moors in the Crusades of the 12th and 13th centuries and later, in which the Knights Templar played a large part.

Gypsy breeders who had connections in large gypsy communities in Spain and Hungary brought many horses into Britain, and much of Spain itself was under Moorish control for over 700 years so many Arabian breeds were also present amongst the Spanish horses.
