Photography Pet Portrait Tips
Dogs, cats, birds, rabbits and horses, as well as more exotic pets, all deserve a stunning pet portraiture and animal painting. Anyone with a camera can take a photo of their pet. However, there is much more to producing a high quality portrait painting than just "point and click".
Once you have decided to get a portrait done of your pet, consider the pose that typifies your pet and how you would like to remember them by. Having thought that one out always carry your camera. The art in taking a good shot is to be patient and take your time. You can get someone to help you engage your pet in a game or maybe just photograph them in some of their unusual sleeping poses be it.
Toy, treat, camera, freind, action. This is helpful to get the attention of your pet. So if you are taking the photo have a friend nearby to assist in positioning the pet. Wave the treat under the nose of your pet and lift it up to the camera and hey presto.
It is adviseable to take more than one photo because of colour differentials that will be highlighted in the various processes that need to be gone through.
It doesn't really matter what the location and background of the subject is because in my opinion the portrait is the main focus of the picture and therefore my backgrounds are simply tonal.
Use natural lighting when possible, therefore outside shots are preferable. If taking photos inside, get close to a natural source of light and do not use a flash. This will give an unnatural colour.
Always take a photo on a slight angle rather than face on. This will give better depth and a more three dimensional representation of your pet.
Reward your pet and you will be rewarded with a perfect pet portrait.

Am I beating a dead horse?
Whenever kids ask for critiques I open the page and check off my mental check list: flower, cat, faucet, sidewalk, fence,shoes, little cousin, soda can, toes, pen, i-pod, sunset, sunflare, keyboard, and eyeball.
Then I yell at them about getting the [bleeeeep] out of their houses and doing something more significant. A portrait of aunt Sally at least, not soda cans. Then I submit, and feel at least the notion is there. They might not follow it right away but I've put it in their heads that flowers are not good enough. So I open the next question, look at their photos and start checking off: flowers, cats... again!
I suggest you leave the kids alone and only critique images that show some pre-visualization and thought.
There are plenty of other kids who will say, "Wow, are you a pro"? or "Awesome!", things like that.
Since even mature adults seem unwilling to take the time to attend a class in photography, just to learn the fundamentals, I have stopped making constructive comments other than sending them to a website that will help them with their composition.
Why the "try and fail" method of learning photography is so popular, given the frustrations expressed so much here, I have no clue.
Give people a new game and they will spend hours learning how to rapidly advance through each level and even do the research on how to hack it, but for some reason, cameras are supposed to know what the person wants and just provide it at the push of a button.
How many people spend good money buying a nice fully adjustable dSLR and then use it as nothing more than a glorified P&S camera, NEVER taking it out of the "auto" or "program" modes ... even to the point of composing all their shots using live view.
