The Many Mistakes Of Buying A Horse For The First Time
When import a mare for the first time, it is not uncommon to make some mistakes. These are some of the most public pitfalls first-time buyers meet when exchange their first steed.
Buying the First Horse you Look At Sometimes a buyer is in such a draft to find a charger that the first mount seems like a refine reach. Perhaps the rate is right, or the mare just seems to be "right." While this may be the right mare for you, it is important to take the time to make effective. This means going out and looking at a few more pigs, so that you have something to link the first mare to. Try the mount out a few times so that you know that you are a good tally. Even experienced pony people regularly shop with experienced contacts. The first time you see a stallion, you can go on your own, but make effective to place to gain with somebody you know and confide. Buying a "Cheap" Horse Unless you have the experience to work with a childish or green horse, it is a bad idea to buy one. While it can be cheaper to buy something untaught, you will should to invest a great compact of teaching into it before you can badger it. Auctions are a finicky shoddy place to buy a horse, but be alert that most horses at auction are there for a logic - often because of exercise evils or other issues. It is forever better to buy your first horse privately, and to make effective that it is well educated and handled before your hold. There is no spot exchange and paying for a horse that you can't use.

how accurate is finding a horses age using their teeth?
i thought i had a 17 year old thoroughbred, but the other day when i was looking for a tattoo in her mouth to see if she has ever been raced my coach came over and looked in her mouth and said she is not 17, she is only about 12. i dont know her true age as i dont have her papers and i was only saying she was 17 because the people we bought her from at the sale said she was 17, but i was wondering how accurate looking at a horses teeth and telling their age is.

You can tell the general age of a horse by looking at their teeth if you know what you're looking for, and if the horse is younger. Horses get their last premolar's and canines by age 5. Younger horses are easy to age by what teeth they've gotten in. After age 5, there are properties to the teeth you can look at to age a horse - like incisor hooks (generally appear at 7 and then again at 11) and grooves (usually appears at 10, is half-way down by 15, bottom by 20). However, those are generalities, and an individual horse's teeth can grow differently. Telling a horse's age by looking at the teeth is really just experienced guess work.

I bought a TB earlier this year. The people I bought her from told me she was 16. My vet told me from looking at her outside, he'd have guessed her at 15, by looking at her teeth, he'd have guessed her at 25. I could only read part of her tattoo - the first letter and last number were faded off. I sent the partial tattoo and pictures of her from all four sides to the Jockey Club (they have an online form, and it's free) and they emailed me back with her registered name the next day. Turns out she's 19.
