Here are a few off-the-tourist-track ideas for spending 48 hours of a weekend getaway in Paris.

 

Stay: Les Jardins du Marais boutique hotel in the 11ieme arrondissement is located on a side street between the Bastille and Republique squares of Paris.  The nieghbourhood is quiet, away from the main city center, with restaurants and bars frequented by locals, not tourists. Rooms were renovated through 2009 and are comfortable, even large, for typical Paris hotel rooms.  Nearby attractions include the Picasso Museum, the Place des Vosges, the Carnavalet Museum, Opera Bastille, and Victor Hugo's House.

Explore: A hop and skip across Pont Saint-Louisfrom Notre Dame Cathedral will bring you to Ile Saint-Louis, one of the most charming quarters in Paris, perfect for a quiet weekend break activity.  Boutique shops like Eva Baz'Art offer fun, unique, colourful Paris gifts; Pom'Canelle is a nice tea salon offering crepes and patisseries; get high-end imports and chocolates from L'Ile Flottante; visit Les Fous de l'Ile for some bistro-style French food; or Diwali for unique, custom-made jewelery and accessories.

 

Eat: Also on Ile Saint-Louis, often dominated by the giant Notre Dame Cathedral, is where you can find the city's best ice cream.  Since 1954, Berthillon has been serving up dozens of flavours to Parisians and visitors without fail.  The ice cream shop is take-away but Berthillon also offers a tea room where you can sit in an old Parisian-style shop to enjoy any combination of ice creams, cakes, macarons, or pastries.

 

Shop: Nearby the Jardins du Marais hotel, in the Le Marais quarter of Paris, you'll find Rue des Francs-Bourgeois, offering boutique and stylish shops for those who don't want to blow their entire budget on a pair shoes on Les Champs Elysees.  Best of all, Rue des Francs-Bourgeois is one of the only areas in Paris that opens on Sunday, a great way to finish off your short Paris weekend getaway.
