Another Side of Jerusalem: Teaching English to Israeli 6th Graders
On Tuesday mornings, I wake up early and head to the bus stop right outside the walls surrounding my dorm. The bus stop is usually packed with students waiting to catch the university chartered bus to Hebrew University’s second campus in downtown Jerusalem. I wait with them patiently usually with my backpack so I look like any normal student. Sometimes it’s cold and windy and we are packed tight under the small awning. Then the university bus comes and everyone gets on – except me. I usually get weird looks from the other students. They probably think I’m a new American immigrant who simply just doesn’t understand the bus system yet. Sometimes people try to convince me to get on the bus, but I’m not headed to the university.
After a few moments, the bus station is empty except me. Then my bus comes – Line 46, northbound to Pisgat Ze’ev. It’s a short ride over Mount Scopus to the outer hills of North Jerusalem where the large neighborhood of Pisgat Ze’ev is located. I get off the bus and walk to the Israeli middle school in East Pisgat Ze’ev – where I volunteer two hours on Tuesdays to teach English to Israeli sixth graders.
I just started my second year helping at this school. The thing I like most about volunteering with foreign students is that when you come from a different country – especially America – you are an instant celebrity. It’s almost as if they post look outs to see if I’m walking down the hall and when the cry is given, “Will is here!” (in Hebrew of course) they all go nuts – in part because they are twelve and in part because they know that instead of a lesson, they will get a story in English from me.
And this is usually how the morning progresses: Freida, the Russian immigrant who is there regular English teacher, introduces the lesson and then turns the floor over to me. After introductions, I tell a story in English about America or my travels and then Freida quizzes the kids in Hebrew to see if they understood the story. Usually, we have time for a questions at the end which is my favorite part.
Some of the stories that I have told have been great fun to tell to Israeli students. It’s fun to talk about faraway places and see their eyes get big. I told them about how once I was staying at an animal reserve in Texas and when I lay down to sleep in my room, a scorpion crawled onto my face. The kids were jumping up out of their chairs saying in English: “Really!? Really!?” Recently, I spoke about the story of Dolly Madison rescuing George Washington’s portrait from the White House before the British torched the city. One kid asked me if Washington, DC was still the capitol of America. I said “yes” though he still seemed confused. “But how?” he stammered. “It burned down!”
After the story, Freida sends me with a group of kids into a side room to work on their spoken English. Usually, my friend Adrienne comes with me and I teach the boys and she teaches the girls. Last year, we were in the school’s synagogue which is ironic because I would usually impose a “no Hebrew, only English” rule on the students to which they would usually laugh “in the synagogue!”
The kids teach me far more than I teach them. One funny learning moment happened during my first few months in Israel. I was teaching the students in the synagogue. They kids asked me if I kept kosher and I told them that I wasn’t Jewish. Their eyes grew wide.
“You’re not Jewish?” they asked me in Hebrew.
I said “no”, and they started whispering in rapid Hebrew to each other.
Finally, one spoke in slightly broken English, “You eat meat ve [and] cheese?”
“Of course!” I said in Hebrew. “In fact, in my bag right now, there is a sandwich with meat and cheese!”
I grabbed the bag, pulled my sandwich out, and pointed to the slices of meat and cheese together.
“Not kosher” I said.
“In the synagogue!” They all exclaimed and started pointing and staring at the forbidden sandwich.
Even just once a week for a school year is long enough time to build great bonds with kids. For our final goodbye to the kids at the end of last year, Adrienne and I came to their sixth grade graduation in the early summer. Can you imagine what the parents thought? Who were these two random Westerners who all their kids knew and ran up to hug? It was quite a cultural experience for all of us although I will say that it’s not much different than sixth grade graduations in the State – except everything is in Hebrew.
This year, like last year, is another adventure of getting to kids and the school system. The school is truly full of wonderful people: the old Israeli security guard, the always smiling Arab janitor, the imposing and professional Jewish woman who is the school’s principal, Freida and her coworkers, and of course all of the kids. Getting to know them and understanding their world is the only thing that motivates a college student like myself to wake up early in the morning and travel to an otherwise uninteresting place.
These are the sorts of opportunities that tourists and even long term travelers miss in countries like Israel. Israel is a country that is so politically charged that we can easily forget that people live normal lives. Many people come to Israel seeking to visit holy sites, political sites, or they come for some sort of adventure. While these are good things, we can easily distract ourselves with what's written in the newspapers and fall into an incorrect conception of a place. While we bounce around from tourist site to political hotspot, regular people lead regular lives just like you and I. And although my experiences in Pisgat Ze’ev are not as exciting as riots in Jerusalem’s Old City or settler violence in the West Bank, they show a different side of Israel that most don’t get the opportunity to see: the human side of Israel.

I guess they think it is theirs because after they were attacked for the umpteenth time, they fought a war for it, pinned the arab's ears back, settled it, farmed it and defended it. Like it or not, that's how boundaries are established. With all the MILLIONS of acres of desert controlled by arabs in the Middle East, and their record of LOSING, you'd think they'd quit making war on children and actually do something to improve their lot.
I find it odd that a country CREATED by the UN is the one the UN does not support, which would make me very nervous if I lived anyplace the UN had its eye on. And also that the only people who have BUILT anything in the Middle East are the ones who are taking all the criticism. The lazy, murdering thugs get all the support.
I guess all the thumbs down came from people who think the Arabs who sit in the Knesset are not...Arab enough.
