A Book Review on "The Talent Code" by Daniel Coyle, published in May 2009 by Bantam Dell, A division of Random House Inc. New York, New York
I used to think it was so useless to try and learn something new. I would struggle, wear myself out and not get anywhere. I used to believe that if your are not gifted at birth, you have very little chance of making it in a new area. You might as well work with what you have and live the status quo. You are not one of the "lucky ones."
Genes, early childhood experiences, came into play about 50 % of the time, according to Daniel Coyle. What about the other 50%? It has to do with myelin. Myelin is not fixed. You can increase your abilities by "earning more myelin." The potential to do this lasts throughout life.
According to Daniel Coyle there are three main ingredients to building myelin including deep practice, ignition(motivation/inspiration), and master coaching. Each ingredient is powerful on its own but when combined synergistically that is when learning velocity increases tenfold.
In his book he talks about the Link Trainer. The Link Trainer was a virtual airplane used to train young pilots before the second world war. Before the second world war many pilots kept crashing, no matter how brave or motivated they were. Pilot trainees needed to learn how to make mistakes and correct them in a safe environment. The Link Trainer, originally thought of as a mere "child's toy," turned out to be a very effective place to learn how to be an expert pilot.
If you want to learn a new skill or build on an existing one it is also critical that you practise in a safe environment, where you can make mistakes, correct them, without risking some kind of loss. What I am referring to is financial loss. Yes, it is common when starting any business, to lose small amounts of money in the immediate short-term and then regain it and break even before you build a profit. If your business has picked up momentum because you've been working it consistently over 30, 60 and 90 days this is when you typically gain profit.
Errorless Versus Error-Focused Learning
Errorless learning is commonly considered as being a desirable way to learn. A person learning something new needs to be led to success in the early stages or they will typically give up. This type of approach actually does work well with children and adults with developmental disabilities, like Autism, Asperger's Syndrome etc. because they seem to need that extra push to keep on learning how to do things considered commonplace, even mundane. It also seems to be a very effective way for these individuals to learn discrimination. This has been my experience and some research backs it up.
I used to think that errorless learning should be the process for everyone when learning something new otherwise it can lead to lots of frustration and heartache and cause a person to eventually give up. Not so.
Error focused learning which involves comparing yourself to a blueprint, making mistakes, correcting them, and then performing the task again without errors is more desirable even if you have to repeat the process over and over again. It helps build more myelin, and building more myelin makes you smarter, according to the most up to date research. Why?
If while practicing a new skill you are breaking it down, going more slowly, and targeting certain areas, the goal is to build layers of insulation to make neural impulses stronger and able to fire more rapidly. The key thing is to learn to correct them on your own by reaching toward your goal rather than thrashing blindly. Another important point is to pick something just outside of your current ability where you will make mistakes. If you do this and practise many times you will succeed. Don't pick something that is too far out of your range of abilities. It is very important to find that "sweet spot, " according to Daniel Coyle.
I will use writing as an example. I am not an expert writer but I have written diaries and letters when I was a child, taken writing courses in college ,and did some writing in my workplace. If I can continue to improve my writing skills I know that I can reach the point where I will be paid a nice sum of money for it. I know that I can reach that goal and that, gradually, the income that I derive from writing will increase.
I love talking to people on the phone and building rapports with them, and helping them if it is possible. I used to think I was sub par in this area. I would call people up, and make mistakes in conversations I had with them, and then get so anxious about the mistakes. These mistakes however, allowed me to improve. By spending some time in the deep practise zone and following some tips from master coaches I could actually excel at this. It is more possible to earn substantial amounts of money doing this because I already have the skill set of building relationships one on one, listening and nurturing people. It is easier for me to reach for that sweet spot.
Error-focused learning, even for children and adults with developmental disabilities, may actually be more desirable after all since that may be the only way to repair their damaged myelin. For a more detailed book review click here.

You like the name Delphine, too! *shrieks with delight* I came across very few people, maybe 2 or so, who liked the name Delphine. I think it's absolutely stunning.
In no particular order...
-- Daphne - I had it taken off my list just recently, though I really like it. It's very catchy and simple.
-- Delphine - I first came across it in a very intriguing novel I read a while back. It was the name of a beautiful, mysterious, and charming character. I fell in love with it since.
-- Dahlia - It's the name of a beautiful flower. I find it quite lovely. I first came across it with a classmate. She wasn't the best of people, though her name was lovely.
-- Delilah - Despite its terrible connotations, I love the sound of it. I'd never consider it for a child of my own, though I certainly can't say I hate it.
-- Diana - I'd never personally use it, though I do find it powerful and becoming. It's very beautiful and would work well on a child. If I had to use it, I'd place in the middle name slot. It adds that little extra to any first name.
