Melrose Abbey

Top Places to Visit in the UK with your Motorhome
It may have been cold the last few months and you may still be waking up to frost on your motorhome window, but summer will soon be here, so it's a good time to look ahead, get out the road maps and plan your next trip in your motorhome.
South East England
If you plan to spend your holiday in the south east of England, you won't be disappointed. Famous for its magnificent parks and gardens there's something for every horticulturalist out there.
The south east also played a huge role in our military history and you can experience this for yourself by taking a tour around Dover Castle and the Secret Wartime Tunnels where Churchill and Vice Admiral Ramsey masterminded the Dunkirk evacuation.
Pitch your motorhome at Hawthorn Farm, Station Road, Martin Hill, Dover.
Central England
The central part of England can often feel like just a network of roads and motorways, however, there are some great places to stop with your motorhome and take in some culture.
There's Stratford-upon-Avon, with it's busy market town, and, of course, the home of William Shakespeare. There's also the stunning scenery of the Cotswolds, not to mention the Black Country with its modern architecture right alongside the old Victorian villages.
While you're there, why not visit Coventry Transport Museum and see the world's largest collection of British Road Transport. It's home to some fantastic vehicles including land speed record cars!
Pitch your motorhome at Dodwell Park, Evesham Road, Stratford-upon-Avon, Warwickshire.
North West England
Taking a trip ‘up north'? With the stunning scenery of the Pennines and the Lake District, there's something for everyone - from long walks up in the hills, to good food in one of the many cosy pubs and restaurants.
If you're taking the children with you and they're getting bored of the beautiful scenery and walking in the countryside, a great place for them is Blackpool Pleasure Beach. They'll have hours of fun on the rides and the amusements, hopefully give you peace and quiet for the rest of the day!
Pitch your motorhome at Windy Harbour Holiday Park, Little Singleton, Blackpool.
Scotland
If your travel plans take you over the border into Scotland, you'll be spoilt for choice with the many destinations and attractions that the country has to offer.
Visit the Tweed Valley which boasts picturesque countryside and quaint towns and villages. If history's your thing then there's plenty of ruined abbey's dating back to the 12th Century at Melrose, Jedburgh, Kelso and Dryburgh.
Pitch your motorhome at Crossburn Caravan Park, Edinburgh Road, Peebles, Scottish Borders.
Whatever your destination, don't forget to give your motorhome the once over before setting off on any long journeys.

What does iconoclast Emperor Leo III have in common with Scottish Reformer John Knox?
From Icons in Constantinople to ruined abbeys in the Scottish Borders destruction of images took various forms. Was there any real similarity in the theology of Leo III and John Knox.
Saved from East and West are the fragments, e.g. of Icons on Mt Sinai, the Coronation of the Mother of God on the ruined east window of Melrose Abbey.
I apologise for my ignorance about Leo III: I will await other Yahoo answerers' replies with curiosity.
John Knox's 'Book of Rules' advised that there be a school in every village in Scotland (the idea was to allow people to read the Bible for themselves and proud Scots villagers gladly paid for these schools out of their own pockets). I believe this was directly responsible for the excellent standards of literacy in Scotland in the eighteenth century.
Reading, unexpectedly, led to thinking and there was a glorious enlightenment in eighteenth-century Edinburgh with such guiding lights as:
David Hume (philosophy), Adam Smith (economics with a human face) and John Hutton (father of modern geology) to name only a few.
Church ruins, without the icons, are a little dreich to look at today but I would gladly trade a few expensive Western fetishes for such advances in real human knowledge.
