One: Your original color - You don't want to get a color that will clash with the original color of your hair. It is always a good idea to look at color samples before deciding. This will help you find a color that will look good in your hair instead of making you look ridiculous.

If you are unsure about what would look good in your hair then talk to a professional stylist about it. They have a lot of knowledge and experience in helping people choose the right color for their hair that will make them look beautiful.

Two: Stylist - It is vital when getting color that you choose the right hair stylist. Don't just assume that any stylist can do the color correctly. You have to take time to be sure so you end up looking good instead of with a head full of disaster.

With so many different stylists available these days you have to take time to research them before making your final choice. This is the only way to be sure you don't choose the wrong stylist.

Three: Skin tone - You have to take time to consider your skin tone because you don't want to get a color that is going to make you look pale and sick. The color you choose needs to enhance your skin tone color and not make you look weird or pale.

Four: Price - This is an obvious thing that needs to be considered. You want to get a color in your hair that will look good for you but you don't want to break the bank to do it. Be sure that the stylist charges a fair price and isn't trying to rip you off.

Now that you know these important factors you will find that it is much easier to ensure you get the perfect hair color for you and that you find the best stylist to do it. Take your time and consider all of these things so you don't end up with a big disaster on your hands that you don't need or want.

How can you turn a color photo to b&w and leave a portion of it the original color with Adobe Photoshop 6?

I want to use Adobe Photoshop Elements 6 to work with a photo. I want the final production to be black and white, but a portion on the photo (the person's tie) to be the original color in the color picture. Any tips?

I usually blow past this general question which has been answered about 20,000 time already (for real), but since you put the specific software you use in the main question, I saw that I could help you.

I use P.E. 5.0 and know that this will work:

Start with a color photo. If you want to add color to a black and white photo, you will have to be very careful, patient and skillful with the paintbrush tool.

This is one way that you can do it in Photoshop Elements. Maybe this is helpful for other image editors as well. It would be helpful to print this out and follow along. It's easy to do, but you must do the steps in order. Perhaps your own image editor has similar commands. If not, you might want to add details or post a new question to tell us what software you will be using.

1. Open the image you wish to alter.

2. Save the image using a different name than the original name so that you don't lose your original.

3. Use any selection tool you wish to outline the object whose color you wish to preserve. The Magnetic Lasso Tool is pretty quick, but the regular Lasso Tool might be more precise.

3-A. Use the erase tool to erase any color that you do NOT wish to preserve.

4. Hit [CTRL]+[C] to copy the selection.

5. Hit [SHIFT]+[CTRL]+[N] to make a new blank layer.
(Name it if you want, but you can accept "Layer 1.")

6. Hit [CTRL]+[V] to place the selection in the blank layer.

7. Move back to the background layer by clicking on that layer in the layers palette. (on the right of your screen)

8. Hit [CTRL]+[SHIFT]+[U] to remove all color.

8-A. ALTERNATE APPROACH No. 1: Hit [CTRL]+[U] and use sliders to desaturate, leaving a hint of color present.

8-B. ALTERNATE APPROACH No. 2: Use a "Convert to Black and White" utility, if your software offers this. In Photoshop Elements, the command is [ALT]+[CTRL]+[B].

9. Hit [CTRL]+[SHIFT]+[E] to merge the layers.

10. Save your work.
