The Art of Illustrating Your Originality in Social Media
You know you're in trouble when your new Facebook page is both good and original, but the part that is good is not original and the part that is original is not good. However, you can easily avoid the latter through the use of original illustrations. Original illustrations are those icons, drawings and clipart that you will not find in royalty free collections such as Stockphoto or, the lowest of lows, Google Images.
Original illustrations are powerful tools that can be used to position your personal brand with your followers / FB friends. It is a crucial element for social media wherein differentiation must be attained within seconds of a mouse click from a potential new follower / friend. For most people making their first attempts at building a personal brand, the most difficult aspect is determining where to start. How do you know what you want to convey through the original illustrations used on your site? Here are a few simple suggestions:
- Take a look at several personally branded sites through Facebook and other social networks and pick the top ten personal and / or fan pages that you really dislike.
- Separate them and in one sentence, state what you do not like about each one. If two of them have the same reason, keep the worst one of the two and throw remove the second.
- Place the list of the things you do not want to convey on your page in a project folder.
- Now repeat the process with 10 sites that appeal to you. Place this list in the same project folder.
- Take the two lists from your project folder and pick the adjectives that describe the reason you do not like a site. One after the other, type each adjective into a Google images search.
- Select the images that you do not like and save them to your computer.
- Next do the same with the adjectives describing all of the things you like. (Note: make sure you are thorough and search graphics, etc. This is important because it tells you what you like for color and texture to your page).
- Go to a site that showcases the original illustrations and the artists that produce them.
- Match your project files to the art found on the site and contact the artist.
- Turn over your project files to the artist and tell them what you want to develop. They now have a complete picture of what is inside of your head, and what moves you.
A great site that showcases artists and their illustrations. Once on the site you can browse by category or forego this and contact them directly. They will take the information for your project and turn it over to an artist of their choosing, or if you have browsed the examples of art on the site, you may select the artist you feel good about. In any case, it is worth the effort if you are serious about your brand and separating from rest of the pack on Facebook and Twitter; because about the most originality that the pack runners can hope to achieve is to steal with good taste.
