About Angela Dufresne Paintings and Solo Exhibitions
Atop a wall of craggy rock, theatrically backlit by an early evening sky,arched walkways connect two wings of a high modernist habitat. Based on a drawing of an unmade building by Frank Lloyd Wright commissioned by the Donahue family, Angela Dufresne's painting is a dream landscape, imbued with the spirit of visionary architecture. It is one of many examples in the artist's work of "places that should have been but never were, that exist only as fantasy." The artist often discreetly inserts herself into her own compositions; unmasked in this case in the long, whimsical title, she picks her way along the shore in the company of two male celebrities, one identified and one not.

What similarities do you see between the ideas motivating modern philosophy, modern drama, modern painting,?
and modern sculpture? Do the artists and authors have enough in common to be part of similar “modernist” movements, or are their forms of creating too different?
Clement Greenburg believed that the modern arts were defined by ""the use of the characteristic methods of a discipline to criticize the discipline itself - not in order to subvert it, but to entrench it more firmly in its area of competence"". So modern art critisised itself from within.
He also saw modernist movements as depending on the specific characteristics of the individual medium. For example, painting became flattened, as flatness is a characteristic not shared by the other arts such as dance or theatre.
