How does Greek vase painting and sculpture change over time?
Greek sculpture becomes far more complex and realistic - in the archaic period of Greek sculpture, figures were stiff and stylized, usually with arms straight along their sides and feet together. In the classical period figures became more realistic and natural, with far more physical detail and a wider variety of both poses and subject material. During the Hellenistic period, statuary became even more naturalistic and more flowing garments and extra decoration were added to the figures. Ancient Greek vase painting went through 5 distinct major periods, most easily distinguished by the colors used on the pottery. The five periods were:
* the Protogeometric
* the Geometric
* the Late Geometric or Archaic
* the Black Figure
* the Red Figure
The protogeometric, geometric, and late geometric periods were characterized by natural colored pots painted with black abstract designs. The black figure period featured colored pots with figures and scenes in black paint. The red figure period was characterized by black pottery with light red figures and scenes.
