Learning from a Couple of Paintings
She was able to get her first dog when this female painter was eight. The small Boston terrier died within a year, but not before it had made a lasting impression on the young girl. A significant role is played by the noble pets in her life. One accomplished painter is what she is and she specializes in dog portraits. She goes through every dog book and magazine she could find as she spent numerous Sunday afternoons in the public library. Showing dogs in trials and dog shows, she first wanted to become a professional dog handler before her art career.
Most of her time when she was 13 was spent in dog shows where she drew and sketched the animals. Making dog portraits and using oils for painting were things she was introduced to by a friend at 16. This specialization was a personal choice even if she is quite capable of painting sea scapes, landscapes, abstracts, and other subjects. Early in her career, she made and sold a number of dog portraits and this told her that her decision was the right one. The dogs owned by members of the family were what she painted in the beginning. What a local pet shop did was put up a notice about her paintings and they also displayed her picture of their own Boston terrier.
For a large measure of her progress, she credits two paintings. One is the painting she did of charlie black, the beguiling little mongrel the animal humane association restored to health and adopted as a mascot. When it comes to the other painting, it pictured a handsome Alaskan malamute, the champion phantom of the ice flue. There was a painting she made of the statue of a jacket found in Tutankhamen's tomb which was unusual. Egyptian symbols were painted in the background. On several occasion, people have asked her to make portraits of other pets including horses. Help from her husband comes in tangible and psychological forms. There was a time when he designed and made a table to hold her paints and brushes. Not only did she make the specially crafted easels and display stands but stained them too and she shows her work using these. The largest portrait she ever made was a three by four foot portrait of a Labrador. Smoother dogs are easier to paint than the longer coated ones. Posing the dogs is something she does not do. It is somewhat hard for a dog to hold its head just right. What she does with the animal is observe it for an hour and this is so that she can remember its typical stance not to mention its sheen and the color of its coat plus the personality or character traits that it shows.
She is rather talented as people say in recording such traits onto a canvas. She works from snapshots furnished by the owner. There are times when the owners cannot give her a picture and so she takes it herself and then blows it up on the screen. What the people she paints for does is choose details like backgrounds. Some prefer scenery, others want it plain. Because of her family commitments she is able to do only one portrait a month. She takes vacations or catches up on her housework.

Born at Derby, Tasmania, in 1933, I was the eldest child of Richard Beswick (1905-77) who came from an old Tasmanian family who were pioneers of mining and farming in our district, and his wife who was born Kathleen Jessup (1907-93), also from pioneering farmers, and who had been a teacher before she married.
