Painting Venice
A Romantic Flights to Venice
If you get near Venice by way of sea, one of the first things you'll see is the San Giogio Maggiore. This is a church that was set upon the tiny island across from Venice and it's the dream work of architects everywhere. The structure is the creation of Andrea Palladio who built the church in 1566. It sports a classical design which includes a line of columns that separate the Austere Choir loft from the alter.
Next, you should visit Saint Mark's Basilica, which is the most reknowned church in Venice. It's named such because the remains of St. Mark, who is the patron saint of the city of Venice, are kept there. The church actually sits in the eastern side of St. Mark's Square. This is the heart and soul of Venice and it's one of the most desired photo attractions for tourists in the world.
When you are touring Venice in the summertime, you will enjoy the Mediterranean warmth never gets too hot or too cold. Saint Mark Square will be filled with people and entranced wtih music as well as culture. You'll find vendors selling corn to feed pigeons that literally come up to you and perch on your arm to eat from the palm of your hand. You can spend a day sitting in the square or you can take the lift to the top of the bell tower of San Giorgio Maggiore and experience the breathtaking view the city offers.
To get away from all the people, you may want to consider traveling during the off-peak times. If you travel during the off time, you will enjoy the aqua alta. This is what they call it when the high tides that occur from September through April cause Saint Mark Square become submerged in water. Many photographers plan trips to Venice during this time of year just to capture this event on film. If you want to experience it for yourself, the tides raise between the new moon and the full moon. Other sites of notable interest include the Doges Palace, which is the palace of justice. The fate and future of Venice was decided within these very walls. Inside the palace is the Sala del Maggior Consiglio, which is a council room that's large enough to seat 2500 people. The palace is actually more like a fortress with high walls that are positioned near the sea for very easy access. It's here that you can view a huge canvas painting by Tintoretto. It's actually graceful when you look at it, despite what it's intended for and its stone walls.
The old market and trading district of Rialto is covered with designer shops right now. If you want to get a real feel for the city, you will want to go into the local bars to talk to the locals. You can walk along the back streets, go over the bridges and canals and view the homes that are built over and around the water. When you travel through wthat is known as the Jewish ghetto, you can see the heartwrenching memorial to the victims of WWII.
With such breathtaking sights, smells and sounds, you have more than enough reason to visit Venice for your vacation this year. It's a place full of energy that everyone should experience at least once in their lives.
