Stitching Together Photos for Panoramic Digital Photos
Photographing Alaska's Hubbard Glacier. It takes several hours for the cruise ship to arrive in Disenchantment Bay, sailing through Yukatat Bay from the Gulf of Alaska. So we had plenty of time to find a great spot on the upper back deck from which we could photograph the glacier.

We had a great vantage point, my camera was ready and I was not disappointed with the photo opps that this magnificent glacier presented. Besides trying to capture a variety of angles and locations on the glacier, let me tell you about how I captured a panoramic view of the entire ice formation.
Stitching Digital Photos for Panoramic View
Before the trip I upgraded by Kodak EasyShare digital camera to a Z980 — which offers the ability to take panoramic photos. (This is one of those features you should read about before you start shooting photos — so you’re ready when the opportunity presents itself.)
My camera has a “stitching” feature. It allows you to shoot 3 consecutive left-to-right photos which it will then automatically stitch together into a panorama.
- Take Photo #1.
- Line up Photo #2. On the far left side of the viewfinder or screen, you’ll see the far right side of the first photo. Line this up with the left side of Photo #2. Snap.
- Line up Photo #3. On the far left side of the viewfinder or screen, you’ll see the far right side of the second photo. Line this up with the left side of Photo #3. Snap.
- Camera Composes the Panorama. That’s it — automatic “stitching” of your three photos into a panoramic shot. Check it out and if you didn’t line up each shot exactly with the previous one, shoot the three photos again.
Make a Personalized Poster of your Panoramic Photo
When you get a panoramic photo you like, upload it to lifephoto.com and create an 8?x18? personal poster of it — vertical or horizontal — just $2.75!! If your shot is vertical, you might want to make a larger photo banner that arrives ready to hang. When you get a good panoramic photo, print it and enjoy it! (Note: below is my panoramic shot of Alaska’s Hubbard Glacier — 6 miles wide!)

How is a 360 degrees panoramic view shooted that is shown in websites?
There are many methods to shoot panoramas, and different styles too, we do 360 degree cylindrical panoramas, using a fisheye lense, then edit the single picture into the panorama.
Another way, is to take a number of still shots, side by side, then "stitch" the pictures together, this can give you slightly better quality of field, but very difficult to get a flawless or seamless picture.
Also, you can have a cube or spherical panorama, so you can scan right over you head and under your feet, these can be made with a fish eye lense in 2 shots, or using the stitching method with at least 8 shots.
Then, to get them on to a web page, you need to choose a platform to construct them with, flash is pretty quick and simple, but modified java will give far cleaner results and be less juddery. I have attached a few links to my site for examples, not just of what we do, but the resources and comparisons that are out there too.
