I have a silver pendant with a small incised pattern that you can't really see. Anything I can rub in?
This is a textured silver pendant with a pattern etched in that is almost invisible. Is there some substance that i could trace or rub into the etching to make it stand out?
There are a number of substances that can be used to do that. While there are silver blackeners, my first pick would still be the metalworker's best friend, liver of sulfur. You can order a can from www.contenti.com for about 13.00 USD. Follow the directions on the can to mix up a small quantity. Then, dip your piece into it until you've gotten the desired color. Then, use your fingers and running water to rub off the excess solution, and use a brass brush (also available at Contenti) to remove the patina from the high points. This will leave the recessed areas black, but the rest of the piece nice and shiny. Seal the piece with either paste wax or some sort of spray fixative. Keep in mind, the fixative will need to be reapplied from time to time, and the patina may occasionally need a touch up as well.
