Recover photos after 'Memory Stick Error' in Sony cameras

A memory stick is a type of flash memory card from Sony. Adobe Photoshop CS2 - how do I get a transparent, soft edge effect?

I used Picture-It from Microsoft to create a compilate (I think thats what it is called when you put several photos together in layers) . There, they have frames &borders, and one can drag a slider, to make the picture transparent at the edges.
That was fine, but for other editing needs, like enhancing the darkness , - sharpness , or cloning parts of the picture - I transfered it to ACD-see Photo editor. All worked fine, but the final result is still not satisfying, because the quality of the photos became pixelated, coarse.... What did I make wrong ? Is it a question of format ? Do you suggest to work on jpg or not ? Is it not adviceable to make one picture on different picture programms ?

Transparency soft edge- all you have to do is to draw a marquee round the image and go to SELECT>FEATHER(Alt+Ctrl+D)and you can select the amount of blur you need. Once selected CONTROL+SHIF+I this will invert the marquee and subtract the unwanted aprt of the image, youll remain with the soft edged image.
The loss of quality is probably coz you optimized the image to a higher extent, save it once again and see if the software gives oyu an option as to how far you wana optimize it, just like in photoshop.
