What might be fun is to scan the portrait and colorize it in Photoshop or some other computer image editor. I agree with the other answerer it is hard to work on someone else's work especially a charcoal drawing. If you asked me to do It I would just start from scratch using the drawing you have as a reference then you would have both works.
