Can I enter something into a cell and have excel automatically enter the list price for that item?
I need to be able to enter a specific wood specie into a cell and have excel automatically enter the list price for that specie in another cell. For example if I enter Pine the next cell will automatically say $1.10 or if I enter Oak it will say $1.54. Is there a way I can do this?
Select two columns not otherwise in use, and out of the way, like columns AA and AB.
In column AA, beginning in row 1, enter all wood specie; Oak, Pine, Leopard Wood, Pink Ivory, etc.
In column AB, beginning in row 1, enter the associated List Price for each specie.
Hide columns AA and AB to prevent printing and just for aesthetics.
Select the all cells in the 'Specie' column that you will be entering data.
Go to Data > Validation
Select 'List' from the 'Allow' drop down menu.
In the Source text box enter:
=$AA$1:$AA$10
Note: this assumes there are 10 species in the list. If more than that, increase the '$10' in the formula.
It is okay to include more rows than you have as they will show in the drop downs as 'blank' selections. But, if you add more specie later to columns AA:AB, you will not have to update the formulas. The 'additions' will just appear automatically in the drop down.
Click 'OK'.
Now, every cell in the 'Specie' column will have a drop down menu listing all the species in your list.
For the sake of this exercise, let's assume the species are in column A. So, if the first cell containing a 'species' drop down is A1, in B1 enter this formula:
=VLOOKUP(A1,$AA$:$AB$,2,FALSE)
Drag the formula in B1 down through the last row containing a species drop down.
You should be set. Select a specie in any drop down and the List Price will appear next to it.
If you wish to add more species, just unhide AA:AB, make the additions, and rehide the columns. The VLOOKUP will automatically adjust.
