The Primitive Yet Loved Masaai of Kenya
This community has fought the hardest to try to keep is culture alive in a place where westernization is washing away any evidence of African culture. The government is trying to do as much as it can to make them adopt new and better ways of life. When it comes top there way of life, you will find a single Masaai owning even over a thousand head of cattle. Most are weak, malnourished and it is a big headache trying to get grazing land for all these animals. The government is advocating for fewer, more productive cows and also for them to embrace other forms of livelihood such as farming.
The primitive Masaai strongly opposed the formal education system. He argued that you do not need an education system to teach the children how to herd the animals. When he finally saw some sense in educating the children; he only agreed to educate the boy child. The girl child is not valued in the community. Most see the dowry ransom when they look at a girl. She is just fit for marriage and siring children.
The dress though very unique is a bit primitive and embarrassing especially to urban folks. They are scantly dressed in shukas. They also take cow's blood as a part of their diet. This is taken row and fresh from the cow. If a Masaai boy decides to undergo the circumcision operation in a hospital, he will be cast out of the community. He is seen as a coward and a traitor. A man should be able to withstand pain no matter how intense it is. The boys go through ritual beatings to make them able to endure pain and make them brave.
