Discovery of the Last Emperor at Qing West Imperial Tombs in Beijing
Puyi of the Manchu Aisin-Gioro ruling family is widely known as The Last Emperor in China. He is one of the most interesting people living in China during the transition period from the Empire to the Republic with the experience from the emperor to prisoner to citizen.
Born in 1905, Puyi was ruling in two periods between 1908 and 1917, firstly as the Xuantong Emperor from 1908 to 1912, and nominally as a non-ruling puppet Emperor for 12 days in 1917. In 1934, he was officially crowned the emperor of Manchukuo under the reign title Kangde. After the founding of People's Republic of China, he was placed in a camp for political prisoners undergoing "re-education". He remained there until his release as "rehabilitated" in 1959, receiving full rights as a citizen on November 20, 1960. From 1964 until his death in 1967, Puyi was a member of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference.
Puyi died of lung cancer in the year 1967 and was buried at Babaoshan public cemetery. In 1995, Persuade by the Hong Kong entrepreneur Zhang Shiyi, Puyi's widow Lishuxian transferred his ashes to a cemetery near the Qing West Imperial Tombs.
Located about 120 km (75 miles) southwest of Beijing, the Qing West Imperial Tombs are among the mountains at Yixian County, Hebei Province. Covering an area of 50,000 square meters, with more than a thousand structures, Qing West Imperial Tombs include the Tai Tomb of Emperor Yongzheng, the Chang Tomb of Emperor Jiaqing, the Mu Tomb of Emperor Daoguang, and the Chong Tomb of Emperor Guangxu, the Hualong Tomb of Xuantong and the tombs of some empresses, consorts, princes and princesses. There are hundreds of stone buildings and carvings intact.
On the both side of the Hualong Tomb of Xuantong, one is buried Puyi's empress Wan Rong and another is his favorite concubine Tan Yuling.
