The Two Princesses
Kate Middleton, or Princess Catherine, wears the engagement ring that was once Princess Diana's, Princess of Wales, the ‘People's Princess. However Prince William adamantly claims "No one is trying to fill my mother's shoes."
In fact Princess Catherine is so far different from Princess Diana as to compare an apple with an orange. Or are they?
Diana's family was from the aristocracy, being a descendant of both King Charles II and King James II of England, but Kate Middleton is a commoner.
Aged 29, Kate is considered to be more fully prepared for life as a member of the royal family, than Diana was. Over the past eight years Kate has been thoroughly groomed, whereas Diana, at just 20 years old, had a mere 6 months preparation, before she walked the aisle with Prince Charles.
While only 5 months separating Kate and William, 28, Diana was 12 years younger than her husband.
Kate achieved a degree in art from a top university. Diana not only failed to finish her studies, but worked for only a few months in a nursery.
Brought up in a broken family, Diana's parents divorced while she was still very young. Kate's family on the other hand are a major support to her.
While Diana started out as a withdrawn shy young lady, she quickly developed a star quality that remains unmatched. People not only saw her beauty, charm, intelligence, charisma and stubbornness, she became universally loved, despite the explosive incidents that saw the bitter divorce between Charles and Diana.
Diana surpassed all the other royals, long after her divorce to Charles, much to the annoyance of the Royal Family, otherwise known as ‘The Firm'.
Queen Elizabeth received heavy criticism when the royal family appeared to show a lack of response at the estranged princesses' death, in the face of the overwhelming outpouring of public grief. Just before the funeral the Queen finally made a history making speech about Princess Diana.
Queen Elizabeth, in 2004, officially unveiled the Diane, Princess of Wales Memorial Fountain in the south-west corner of Hyde Park in London.
After his mother's death, Prince William showed anger over the ‘prison of hereditary tradition'. Only time will tell if Prince William and his bride Kate will be capable of doing things differently.

If you mean biologically, yes, most members of the British peerage, except perhaps for recently created peerages, are at least distantly related to the Royal Family. If you have access to Ancestry.com, you can look up Princess Diana's lineage and see where it connects with royalty.
