Looking for an affordable childrens book printer?

I have a series of eight children's stories that I would like to self publish and print.I am looking for an affordable book printer.I could use some handy tips from someone who has some experience in this area.
I thought perhaps an offshore printer.Any help appreciated.

You lucked out, I'm a pro editor and a writer and have been selling books since the 80s.

Why not submit them to an advance-paying publisher?

If you have submitted and they were not accepted, then workshop them to bring them up to speed. You worked hard on them, you should get an advance!

Getting professionally published is a slow process. If a book comes back it just means it needs more work to make it commercial. Mine kept coming back for two years, but I rewrote it every time and finally landed a 6-book contract with a big house. (They're all still in print after 20 years, too.)

The problem is, the vast majority of self-pub books never sell more than 50-75 copies. Chances are very good you will never make back your costs.

Most parents buy books in the stores. Self-pubs never get there, nor are they listed in Library Journal where libraries may order them.

Also there are a ton of scammers, vanity, and reverse vanity presses who will see you as a juicy slice of fresh meat.

Beware of them:

PublishAmerica is the WORST. Steer clear of them. They wave the flag and praise Jesus, but they ruin lives. Your books will never reach the stores. They make money selling overpriced copies to their own writers.

If, after reading all that, you *still* want to self-pub, a safe and cost free venue is www.lulu.com.

You can upload books and their covers for free, open an e-store on their site, and they print the book as it is ordered. There is a charge for that, but it is paid for by the person ordering the book.

If it costs 3.00 to print your book, you can sell it for 5.00 and make some money. (Hint--do NOT jack up the price too much or you'll never sell anything. See how much comerable books are at the stores.)

But again--Lulu is self-publishing, and your works won't be in the stores or on Amazon or in libraries. You will not be qualified to join professional writers organizations or guilds.

But at least you're not out of pocket.
