3D printing is a variety of additive manufacturing technology. A 3D printer is capable of producing a solid three dimensional object by stacking one layer of a material over another. The material generally used is plastic or metal.

3D printing promises great help in our work. This amazing technology has various applications in our daily life. These comprise architecture, prototyping, design visualization, metal casting, education, healthcare, and entertainment. In addition to the current applications, it has some very promising applications in the future. Imagine making physical objects as per one's desire by using a device connected to one's computer.
The current applications of this wonderful technology include:
1. The major use of 3D printing technology at present is prototyping in product development. It assists designers and engineers to identify any problems with the efficacy of earlier design, and requirements analysis before the initiation of the manufacturing process. It saves a lot of cost.
2. Different biotechnology firms are undergoing studies on 3D printing technology for its use in tissue formation to create replacement organs and body parts. In this technique, living cells are deposited on a layer of gel medium. This is referred to as organ-printing or bio-printing. This will help people have artificial organs with the same dimensions as an original organ.
