It would be a great opportunity to bring the whole family to these historical places because you will get to learn the rich history of Dorset and come face to face with unique collections and exhibits. Here are some of the historical sites in Dorset that you should visit.

Old Church

There are many amazing old churches near the Dorset holiday cottages. Discover the history of your faith by visiting some of them. One of the oldest infrastructures in the United Kingdom is the Christchurch Priory Church. A historical church that was first established in 800 A.D. according to historians, many tourists go here for prayer and pilgrimage. Many old artefacts here are on display too. In addition to that, there is an old museum inside the church which was built in the 15th century. This church is very accessible from the holiday cottages where you are staying at. You can take any of the public transports around Dorset and take time to renew your faith by visiting here.

Castle

Many castles around the United Kingdom were once home to famous kings and queens in the past. If you are staying at the holiday cottages during your family vacation, you should not miss the Sherborne Castle. Its history dates back to the 12th century and you will have the chance to see the rooms, equipments and private belongings that were once used by the royalty. It would be an awesome part of your family vacation to roam around the castle that was built by Roger Bishop of Salisbury. Then in 1592, the Sherborne Castle had a new owner, Sir Walter Raleigh. He constructed a new house within the castle during his reign. Then Sir John Digby added four wings to the castle in 1617. It gave the infrastructure an improved look because of that. The Wingfield Digby was opened to the public for the first time in 1969. It was really a breathtaking site which has attracted millions of tourists every day. This is definitely a must-see site while staying at the holiday cottages during your vacation with the family.

County House

The Kingston Lacy is another important historical place that you should visit during your family vacation in Dorset. Leave the Dorset holiday cottages early in the morning and take the public transport leading to Wimborne Minster where it is located. The Bankes family were the previous owners of the County House but now the National Treasury is administering it. You can see here a vast collection of antiques, fine arts, and paintings that dated back to 17th century. Some of these valuables are even over 400 years old. Take time to visit this place while staying at the holiday cottages with your family.

What do Christians think about the fact I live within walking distance of 4 pubs that used to be churches?

I personally think it's a bit sad but what do you think?

One of them is called "soul", is that disrespectful?

..
lol - no joke, i live on Union St in Aberdeen. I have the choice of about 100 pubs without breaking a sweat.

...
((((Olga)))), I don't think google maps will give you directions to drive across the Atlantic, m' dear.

:-)

Well, supposedly 42% of the UK is atheist/agnostic now, so I think you'll see more of that. The next generation (those under 19) are 66% atheistic, so I imagine lots more churches will be going out of business. I just read an article that said only 15% of people in the UK actually go to church once a month (not week, month).

Where my hubby grew up in Camden, London, three of the four Episcopalian churches are gone and the Scots-Presbyterian one he went to when he lived in Oxford (near Crowley) is now a vocational training center.

Good (and brief) article here from a couple of months ago:
Why atheism will replace religion

Yeah, the "Soul" pub is kinda disrespectful.
I do like the architecture, hymns, art, ethics and so forth of religion. It's just that I come unstuck on the "god" part :)
