Funeral Services Scriptures
For words of comfort, wisdom, and assurance, consider adding scripture texts to the funeral service. If you are planning a religious funeral service, remember that scriptures may alleviate any despondency in the service, while providing comfort for the family and friends of the deceased.
Wherever the service may be held, in a church, funeral home, or other type of service center, scriptures are always appropriate for use. The Bible is full of encouraging words that can help the believer in a time of loss.
Note that some religious denominations utilize certain scriptures for the service. For instance, the Catholic denomination will read texts in a specific format from both the Old and New Testaments. Other passages from the Bible may be read in funeral services that are not affiliated with the Catholic denomination. If the family members or friends of the deceased have specific passages they would like to be read, they should include them in the funeral service.
To ensure the scripture recommendations from friends and family are appropriate, share them with a pastor or officiant before the funeral service. A memorial service is the best situation in which to read and contemplate scripture texts. Remember that during this time of loss, people are ready to hear and listen to words of encouragement.
Many options for scriptures are available; you may reference them in the funeral message, hear them in a reading, or place them in the funeral program. Note that the Bible has many translations, from a traditional King James Version, to a contemporary New International Version.

Can religious beliefs be discussed without citing scripture?
Please take it easy, folks....I'm just trying to understand my own relatives; I'm not taking sides.
I think that is possible, however, because there are some people who don't have a gift for putting words with the way they feel, they can more easily identify and express themselves with something that has already been written. For them, this can be a good thing, but for everyone else, it may be harmful, because this lends itself to using quotes out of context and making the discussion impossible to rationally understand. Maybe someday we'll all be eloquent.
