The True Guggenheim Effect: When the Architect rivals the Artist
More than simply a museum, Bilbao's Guggenheim is a work of art in itself. For this very reason, beyond its exhibits and events, the first thing that draws our attention is its unusual architecture, which is responsible for the ‘Guggenheim Effect,' to coin a phrase.
The Guggenheim Effect refers to the economic and social transformation of Bilbao resulting from the opening of this world-famous museum. How was the Guggenheim able to resuscitate Bilbao from its lethargic state? It was through art. Only an audacious, visionary architect dared to defy the rules of architecture and erect a monument that is at once a building, a cathedral, a spaceship and a three-dimensional work of art.
The Guggenheim is also a sensual, musical composition, balancing a Pierre Bosco painting with other forms that speak of Bilbao's past, present and future. Even if everything has already been done in architecture, you will never see another building like this, a modern cathedral constructed of titanium, granite and glass. The Guggenheim expresses feelings through three-dimensional objects: what you see on the outside is what you will experience on the inside. Visitors feel as if they are standing inside of a massive work of art.
The entrance to the Guggenheim takes us back to Luxor in the era of the Egyptian Dynasties, with a long staircase brightened by a play of light and shadow, designed by the genius, Frank Gehry, the creator of this ‘flying saucer' of Bilbao. Upon entering, you feel as though the future is already here as you walk around inside of a colossal work of art, a living painting of immense proportions. More than a few people have compared it to a spaceship straight out of Star Trek or Buck Rogers.
So, it is no surprise that the museum had over 700,000 visitors during its first year, which is more than double the population of Bilbao. The truth is that Bilbao would never be the same without the Guggenheim. Each year, the 24,000-square-foot museum welcomes 1,000,000 visitors and the reason for this is that the Guggenheim Effect not only revived the Basque economy, but its spirit, as well.
If the outside of the museum surprises you, its content won't fail to make an impression, either. There are Mark Rothko paintings that are gigantic, but intimate at the same time, as well as the 1958 Iberia Series by Robert Motherwell, most notably the enormous, completely black painting with a tiny white opening at its lower left-hand corner.
But what happens when the architect rivals the artist? You stop simply looking at art and start feeling it, living within it. The true Guggenheim Effect is when one talks more about the architect than about the artists whose work is on display!
