Top 4 Ideas For Visits to Kent

As one of the oldest counties in the UK, Kent is home to a large variety of historic structures. It is also full of gorgeous English countryside and the amazing coastline along the English Channel, which includes the imposing Cliffs of Dover. Its towns boast entertaining shopping and night life, from antiques to theatre.

1. Visit Historical Sites

Dover Castle, with its view of the English Channel, has been considered the 'Key to England' by invading forces throughout history. Most recently, it was the site of World War Two secret planning meetings, which took place in the tunnels under the castle. For more World War Two history, a visit to Winston Churchill's country estate, Chartwell, is a must. The house has been largely maintained as it was during Churchill's lifetime. Canterbury Cathedral is one of oldest buildings in Kent. Its heritage stretches back to 597 AD, when it was founded by St. Augustine, and includes the murder of Archbishop Thomas Becket in 1170.

2. Great Activities for Kids

Kent's animal parks are excellent entertainment for kids. Wildwood at Herne Bay offers tours through a forest sanctuary to see English wildlife. Port Lympne Wild Animal Park boasts a safari complete with elephants, rhinos, and zebras. Farming World is the place to see giant Shire horses, Scottish Highland cows, and falcons. Other activities that kids love are exploring the maze at Leeds Castle, and checking out the exciting re-enactment battles at Deal Castle. Another kid-friendy location is Dickens World, a Dickensian England adventure land with all sorts of rides and games.

3. Shopping

Shopping can be the perfect way to wander around some of Kent's historic towns. Antiques shops are a thriving business on King's Mile in Canterbury, and in the town of Tunbridge Wells. Rochester boasts Baggins, the biggest used book store in the UK, as well as a variety of specialist boutiques.

4. Out on the Town

In the evening the towns of Kent buzz with activity. Quality theatre abounds, including shows at the historical 1787 Theatre Royale in Margate. Canterbury is a great place to find cozy pubs and bistros, including the long established Alberry's Wine Bar and Bistro. Evening candlelit boating on the river in Canterbury is also a lovely way to spend an evening.

Kent is full of amazing green space and coastline. Cycling is a popular way to see the countryside, as are walking tours. Golf courses abound for those who want to hit the links. If you'd like to explore the coastline, a walk along the White Cliffs of Dover is a stunning way to spend an afternoon. Or, for an amazing view, why not go for a hot air balloon ride? There is also kitesurfing, sailing, and seal watching on offer, especially around Herne Bay.

m/s rochester castle chester imformationabout this ship please?

this ship was sailing around the turn of the 19th century

The Rochester Castle was actually a later addition to the famous Union-Castle Line.

ROCHESTER CASTLE was built in 1937 by Harland & Wolff at Belfast with a tonnage of 7795grt, a length of 474ft 2in, a beam of 63ft 4in and a service speed of 15 knots although she attained 19 knots during trials. Delivered on 29th April 1937 she was the first of a class of four ships which were slightly larger than the earlier 'R' class. She made her maiden voyage to Port Natal on 12th May and was subsequently deployed on the South Africa - UK refrigerated fruit run. In 1940 she was placed on a war footing and on 10th August 1942 participated in Operation Pedestal, the most critical of the Malta convoys. Fifteen ships including the tanker Ohio sailed from Gibraltar with vital supplies for Malta escorted by a battlefleet consisting of two battleships, four aircraft carriers, seven cruisers and thirty destroyers. After three days and after being continually attacked by the Axis forces only the Rochester Castle, Blue Star's Brisbane Star and Melbourne Star, Port Line's Port Chalmers and the badly damaged tanker Ohio reached Valetta on 13th August. On the approach to Malta the Rochester Castle was hit in No.3 hold by two torpedoes launched from German E-boats but she managed to reach port, the first vessel to do so. Because of her damage she was forced to remain in Malta until the following December when temporary repairs enabled her to make the dash for Alexandria and thence to New York via Cape Town where permanent repairs were made. In June 1942, duly repaired, she arrived back in Liverpool with a cargo of frozen meat from Buenos Aires. She was sold to Castle Shipping Corp. of Cyprus in 1970 and renamed Glenda for her final voyage to Whampoa where, on 13th November 1970, she was the last of the six 'R's to be broken up.

Formed 1900 by the merger of Union SS Co. and the Castle Mail Packet Co. 1912 Royal Mail group took over control of the company. 1919 Bullard King & Co.'s Natal Direct Line taken over. After the collapse of the Royal Mail group in 1931, Union-Castle Line was left with heavy financial commitments and took several years to achieve recovery and become an independent company again. The King Line was taken over in 1949 and in 1956 a new company was formed - British & Commonwealth Shipping Co. Ltd. by the merger of Union-Castle, Bullard King and Clan Lines. British & Commonwealth combined with South African Marine Corp. Ltd. in 1973 to become International Liner Services Ltd. but air travel was rapidly replacing ships and by 1982 the company had withdrawn from shipowning.
