What Parts Make Up A Sail Boat
Have you ever had the privilege of sailing across the oceans water in a sail boat? This is one of the most enjoyable experiences that you could ever take pleasure in. A sail boat is a boat that uses the wind as the primary way of moving across the water. There are many different variations of the sail boat that includes everything from yachts to small personal crafts.
Regardless of how big or how small sail boats are they all have certain features in common. To help you understand what makes up a sail boat you will find listed below the meanings of the basic parts of a sail boat.
There are eight basic parts to a sail boat that you need to have as much knowledge about as possible. To have a safe experience out on the water understanding the fundamental parts of a sail boat can be helpful. The eight basic parts are listed below.
1. Bow
2. Stern
3. Tiller
4. Deck
5. Sail
6. Hull
7. Mast
8. Rigging
The bow is the front part of the boat and the stern is the back of the boat. You steer the boat with the tiller and the deck is the area of the sail boat where you can stand. Of course, the sail is the part of the boat that the wind catches and propels you across the water. The hull is the body of the ship that is the central point of the boat. This part keeps the boat afloat the most since it has the most buoyancy.
The mast is the tall vertical pole on which the sails are supported. Usually the more masts used to hang sails the bigger the boat. The rigging is the ropes and lines that are attached to the hull which are used to hoist or trim the sail.
It is important to make sure that you do learn about the different parts of the sail boat in order to know how to handle yourself while out on the water. For safety reasons it would be a good idea for everyone that will be on the boat to learn as much as they can. It is just good common sense to have more than one person onboard that understands the sail boat who can take over in the event that something happens to the primary captain of the boat.
It is also important to keep the boat and the sails in the best condition possible. If your equipment is worn or if you have a tear or rip in your sails, you will run into problems that can become big safety issues.

how did the old big boats ( pirate boats ) sail/move without the engines?
Just got suddenly curious so i tried searching it but no answer .. How did the old big boats sail when they have no engine that time? I am talking about those big boat where you see in Pirate movies or any other movies like "the Troy"
They used..... wait for it..... sails!!
In all but the deadest air they were able to maneuver the ship with the rudder and various combinations of sails.
Square-rigged ships, like in Pirates of the Caribbean are the most difficult to handle, as they cannot sail very close into the wind (close hauled) and require a ton of manpower. They were designed to take advantage of trade winds on long voyages where the wind would push them from the back.
Going into the wind (or nearly so) requires the use of fore and aft sails, like you see on smaller sailboats and schooners. Most square rigged ships will have a selection of fore and aft sails (triangular stay-sails between the masts, jib sails in front, and a spanker on the mizzen or rearmost mast) for the few times they need to sail into the wind.
If you want to go into the wind, you have to do what is known as 'tacking'. You sail as close hauled as you can to the wind in one direction, then turn to sail as close hauled as you can in the other direction so your average course is directly into the wind.
For very strong winds, the sails need to be 'reefed' which means reduced in area so they don't damage the rigging, tear, or capsize the boat.
For fine maneuvering in a harbour, on a square rigged ship you can 'back' the sails to act like a brake. This is done by moving the yards (which the sails are hung under) so the wind pushes against the front of the sail rather than the back. The advantage of this is it can be done quickly on verbal command.
