Five Lessons from a Former Homeless Woman, Now a CEO
Life in these economic times can be difficult and frightening. However, these circumstances may be necessary for growth. This was one of five lessons Stephanie Tillman, a former homeless woman, had to learn before becoming the founder and CEO of a million dollar graphic design company.
After Stephanie Tillman’s husband graduated from college, the couple continued to live the wild party life. Then, in June 2002, the Tillmans found themselves and their two children homeless.
With no other place to go, the Tillman family arrived at a Salvation Army homeless shelter. Combined with God’s grace, dedicated Salvation Army workers, and a lot of hard work, the Tillmans were able to leave the Lodge after four months and move into their own duplex.
One of the first lessons Stephanie learned was to know when to accept help. The Salvation Army shelter assisted the Tillmans in getting back on their feet. Also, the Salvation Army’s required life skills classes revolutionized the way Stephanie manages their budget and raises her children.
After leaving the Salvation Army, Stephanie landed a marketing position at an engineering firm. However, Stephanie’s ultimate dream was to assist the homeless. She spent hours developing a mission and vision plan that included starting a homeless shelter, establishing a clothing line, and writing a book.
However, when a friend asked Stephanie to design a brochure for a film company, plans began to change. Stephanie experimented with graphic design and taught herself various design programs. Then, in 2007, Stephanie left her job to establish her own design firm, Crossover Graphics.
The second lesson Stephanie learned was about the importance of hard work. She notes that going to the homeless shelter was the easy part; “picking yourself up is the hardest part. [You must] work harder than others.” A part of working hard consists of taking the initiative to reach your goals. Stephanie, who had no experience in graphic design, taught herself graphic design so she could accomplish her dreams.
Flexibility was the third lesson Stephanie learned. She spent months designing a vision board for a clothing line that would support her other projects, but as God directed, she changed her plans to establish a graphic design company.
The fourth lesson Stephanie learned was that growth is possible in hard circumstances. She says, “[Growing] is about embracing your circumstances and seeing what you can learn and gain from [the experience].”
Stephanie’s company, Crossover Graphics, has continued to expand, and in 2009, despite the economy, it exploded with new growth, including the addition of five full-time employees, the establishment of CGP Marketing & Advertising through an engagement with another advertising company, and a revolutionary product premiering in January 2010.
The final lesson Stephanie learned was not to make excuses as to why she could not accomplish her dreams. Stephanie explains, “We all have a purpose and a mission that we must accomplish for the greater good. There are people who need us to accomplish our dreams. Our purpose is to accomplish our dreams so they can accomplish theirs.”

How much is $100 donation to salvation army worth in the tax return?
I will be donating some items to salvation army soon. I itemize and I am not sure that if I donate $100 to the salvation army in worth of good, how much do I get back, how does it work? Do I actually get back the whole $100 or is it $100 times my tax bracket?
You definitely don't get back the whole $100. If you itemize, you'd get the $100 times your tax bracket, so maybe $15 or $25. If you don't itemize, then you don't get anything off your taxes for the donation.
