Cheapest way to travel/places to visit in Guatemala?
My friends and I are considering a trip to Guatemala because we've heard that it is inexpensive. We would be interested in seeing historical sites as well as experiencing the party scenes there. Where should we travel? How much is the average hotel room? Any personal experiences you can give would be awesome! Thanks!

i am an aussie living in guatemala right now. yes it is inexpensive to travel here, though the cheaper ways are uncomfortable and unsafe. heres what i would do.
My favourite places in Guatemala are.
Antigua - history (churches, temples,second oldest city in guatemala), surrounded by volcanoes, biggest touristy place, so heaps of people from other countries to meet, tours from here go everywhere, best party atmosphere (check out reillys pub on sunday night), you could have a great experience and save heaps of money to by joining a spanish school and being hosted by a guatemalan family. will cost you about $23 a day to have 4 hours of lessons, accom with family and three meals. The schools offer volcano climbs (pacaya is amazing) coffee planation tours, and much more for very very cheap and sometimes free. The markets on the end of town, have clothes, bags, jewellery, shoes, dvds etc, and for super cheap too. best place to shop in the country. Food is about 4-15dollars, check out cafe sky, where you can get nachos for two-three people for $7, so good. shuttle bus from airport.
Lake Atitlan - you just need to google the place to know why i love it. its beautiful!! i stayed in san marcos last week for $40us a night, which was divided between 3 of us, so very cheap. food is more expensive here, because it is alittle further from panajachel, but you are still looking at 50-70que for a pizza, like 6-8 dollars. San pedro is much cheaper again, but the veiw is not as nice as from san marcos. These places are not party though, its more your relaxation and meditation sites, you can get a shuttle bus from antigua though, it is worth a visit. 2hours from antigua.
Xela/queztaltenango - this is once again beautiful, surrounded by volcanoes and the second biggest city in guatemala, it is older and does not have the city feel, it is beautiful. spanish buildings everywhere you feel like you are in italy or something. Last wed and thurs night cost me $15 dollars each night. the actual room was $30 for the night and slept 7 people. meals are more expensive here, looking at about 8-10 dollars for a decent meal. once again shuttle bus from antigua, though the ride is about 4-5hours.
Peten and Tikal - i am sure you have heard of tikal, and it is worth a visit if you have the time, it is a beautiful place and if you go make sure you spend the money on getting a guide, i think you will need at least one-two full days to see it all. i spent about 5hours, only saw half and ran around trying to find things, the place is huge and the guide will tell you the history and show you things you couldnt find on your own. Accomodation, we stayed 30km from tikal, (flores is about 100km) cost us $25 for the night and 5 of us slept in the room, (5bucks each). getting into tikal is about $12each. food is around the $4mark once again. You can get a shuttle or tour from antigua, just make sure you will have enough time, its about 9hours by car from antigua.
As for the city, i would simply skip it, i have lived in it for the last 3 months and to be honest i dont think there is much to see here. it is like any other city, populated, dirty and busy, and not to safe for foreigners, i think you can get a truer guatemala experience from the other places i have mentioned.
dont be temped to get a chicken bus, only around antigua (like to your host family), chicken buses get there names from being packed like chickens, i have had to hang onto the back and stand on the bottom step, they dont have regualtions about the amount of people, and they make the seats wider to fit three to a seat. if you are travelling you do not want to be standing up or squished with 81 (yes i counted one day) other people, it is not safe with your bag nor is it comfortable.
i would grab the lonely planet guide too, its a great way to get prices of things and read up on the nicest places, (it is three years old though, so make sure you do some research as well)
