BP Oil Spill Disaster-What Will Happen Now?
We are all very well aware of the fact that there is an uncontrollable oil leak plummeting into the Gulf of Mexico as we speak. We are concerned about the welfare of the wildlife being affected as well as what this will mean for fishermen and women, not to mention the economy as a whole. My question is, what type of long-term irreversible effects if any will this have on the environment?
Let's start with what's happening now. Not only do we have the BP oil spill, now officials claim that Ocean Saratoga, another oil rig in the Gulf has been leaking oil since April giving way to a 10 mile cloud. The BP oil spill has spread 42 miles from the BP leak site into the Gulf of Mexico and the cloud of oil reaches a depth of 3,300 feet but continues to grow. The spill emits 500,000 to one million gallons of oil every day into the ocean. There has been a great effort to cap off the oil though it has been only partially successful. BP is currently working on a new solution.
Officials of Shell oil warned the government back in 2000 of the risk of such a catastrophe when drilling below deep waters. The Miami Herald announced that the Shell plan read, "Regaining well control in deep water may be a problem since it could require the operator to cap and control well flow at the seabed in greater water depths ... and could require simultaneous firefighting efforts at the surface". This whole situation seems so uncontrollable it is concerning the general public and making us question what the ramifications will be should it continue to leak.
Surrounding wildlife is suffering from this disaster. There is less oxygen in the Gulf waters for sea life. The oil is reaching marshlands and destroying the reeds as well as affecting birds. Birds who get oil on their feathers attempt to clean it off and can very easily get the oil in their eyes causing them to go blind. Birds that get oil on their wings are unable to fly and those who consume the oil will die. This is a very sad sight to imagine and many of us have already seen the disturbing photographs. The Louisiana Department of Wildlife has declared that 400 types of fish are in danger as well as 100 species of birds. One dolphin and one sea turtle are confirmed to have died as a direct result of the oil but not all of these creatures that have washed up on shore were tested for oil consumption. We can only hope they can stop this leak as soon as humanly possible to salvage what is left of our wildlife.
Are nearby residents safe? Those who live in close approximation to the spill say that the fumes are very strong and one woman was actually shown online wearing a gas mask on the beach. Can people become ill as the direct result of the oil spill? The answer most likely is yes. Some residents as well as many workers helping with the cleanup of Gulf shorelines ended up at hospital with the same complaints. Most of the symptoms were flu-like such as headaches and nausea and some were also complaining of breathing problems. These are the same symptoms experienced by workers in the Exxon Valdez cleanup project.
One worker who was spending the night on a vessel near the site of the spill claims that BP might have been spraying dispersants from an airplane overnight which could have caused his flu-like symptoms and bloody nose, though the company does not agree. Over 6,000 workers involved in the Exxon cleanup came down with respiratory problems. Officials say that it is difficult to prove that the symptoms experience by workers are the direct result of the fumes from burning oil or dispersants and this makes it easy for BP to claim that they are not at fault. The symptoms are general for the post part and could technically be the result of many other factors. What makes it obvious is the amount of people that sought medical attention, all with similar symptoms and the fact that they were all within the area of the spill.
The hurricane season is here and winds could carry the oil up the east coast. That is not the only concerning factor. The mix of oil and other chemicals from the dispersants can be blown onto the land and forced into the air during a storm and this could be bad news for area residents. According to ABC News, Dr. Robert Chugden of Jefferson Medical Center said, "Our concern is we're in hurricane season and it's going to aerosolize everything in the water. And there will be micodroplets that everyone is going to inhale". This hurricane season is predicted to be very eventful.
Unfortunately, there are no guarantees here and no immediate fix for this situation. There are very few predictions out there for what might happen to our environment in the near future, though scientists are not releasing any major statements until more research is done. We do know that many species of fish are in danger including our dolphins and that birds are suffering, most notably pelicans and they were just recently taken of the extinction list. We may not be aware of what toll it will take on us until it's here. For now, the best thing we can do is pray that we can put a lid on this thing before we get a hurricane.
