In Their Own Way
What inspires two English teachers to develop games for English language learning?
While waiting in line for the Admissions Council for Masters' in Language Teaching at Tel Aviv University, Zohar Jacobson and Galit Yanai Ben-Artzi met for the first time. Unseemingly, they come from very different backgrounds. In fact, in terms of personality, they are different in every aspect. Galit (38) is the "good girl" who followed the normal path that would make any "Polish" mother proud. First the army, then a trip around the world and only afterwards, diving into her academic career, works at the Ministry of Education with children with learning difficulties, in diagnosis and remedial teaching. Zohar (42) is one who for her, the word "furrow" is offensive, one that lives in order to battle with the windmills. Unacceptably, she did not go on the trip after her army service, and immediately began university studies, which she did not complete due to learning difficulties diagnosed later than usual. After she quit her studies in favor of work in communications, hi-tech, and print production, she completed the cycle she began and went back to her studies. The completion of her degree was the "short cut" to the Master's degree, where aforementioned, they first met.
Their first meeting led directly to the following events. The random conversation in the hall between the two about their studies and degrees led Galit to believe she does not have a lot in common with Zohar, and it would be best to keep her distance. With this foundation, the program provided a good basis for change, the decision to put aside their differences occurred during their first lesson on their first day of classes, where again the two met. Within that first lesson, they decided to work together on assignments for the course. Their shared interest and professionalism in English were the qualities that deepened the bond between the two opposites. Their shared love of games as learning tools, and combination of theory from their studies and experience working with children with learning difficulties led them to the conclusion that the existing material and games for learning and teaching English in the Israeli market are insufficient and in some cases inappropriate for Israelis, as they are intended for native speakers of English. "During our shared work with the children, we found that the vocabulary in the games were irrelevant to Israeli culture and daily life. For example, one game for teaching vocabulary to beginners teaches the word for squirrel. "When exactly was the last time you saw a squirrel running around the streets of Tel Aviv?" Asks Galit, "The children were unable to read this word and internalize it at all at this point in their lessons. Not to mention that word recognition is difficult to pronounce for beginner pupils," adds Zohar. ָAnother problem faced by these two was cultural and religious differences. "It is true that learning a language also means learning about another culture, but learning the word 'Christmas' creates a problem, from the structure of the word, and for some of the population, its also an issue in terms of religion," summarizes Galit. Despite these problems, Zohar and Galit believe English is the bridge to the world and that playing games is a wonderful way to learn English, and they found themselves making their own games for their personal use, just like most other English teachers. "We did not just invest in a game from a didactic perspective, we also invested in the level of the game and the quality," reminds Galit.
Up until this point, the story isn't unusual, but from this point on comes a surprising turn of events. "Our colleagues began asking if they could buy our games. Who would have thought at all of selling these games? As these teachers are our friends, we gave them the games for free," recalls Zohar of the beginning.
The reactions immediately began pouring in. Zohar and Galit began receiving compliments from their colleagues that the games really work. Teachers told them how pupils who previously refused to participate in class began asking to play the English games for fun. Their knowledge of English improved immensely and they began to enjoy their English lessons. "We understood that we had stumbled upon something great," says Zohar, "when the teachers told us that they took our games home in order to play with their own children, we came to the conclusion we would not be able to continue and distribute games without a loan to produce the games" This is how, very much by chance, the initiative called 'ZigZag Language Games' was founded as a joint business.
Galit and Zohar began to develop games simultaneously with their work at the Ministry of Education as teachers. They were unable to find a business partner that had the financial means to invest in the educational initiative; nevertheless they never gave up hope. They used their own money and started producing games during the free and late evening hours, even in the late months of Galit's pregnancy. "After the initiative 'ZigZag Learning Games, dependent on independent self-financing, and on cheap labor, that is to say, Galit and me," jokes Zohar, "we, in fact, did everything. Everything includes graphic design, packaging, dropping it all of to print, purchasing and carrying paper, quality control of the printing, gathering, packaging, and even pain and suffering." "My son wasn't even born yet, and he had already worked for 'ZigZag'," tells Galit, who spent her maternity leave packing games into their boxes. "During this period, I used my living room as a workshop. My friends stopped talking to me, because with every visit I would put them to work. Never once did we ask ourselves if this is why we studied for our Masters', to work as industrial workers?" recalls Zohar on this stressful period. The market of teachers welcomed the games with open arms.
At this point, Zohar and Galit turned to MATI – The Center for Entrepreneurship Development, the independent branch supported by the Office of Industry and Commerce, in order to receive consultation on and to further their idea. At MATI, they were very enthusiastic about the games and the hidden opportunities within them, and 'ZigZag Language Games' received a stipend for personal mentoring at the Office of Industry and Commerce. Galit and Zohar tell that the business mentoring "opened the doors for them" in other directions and in many other business aspects and they turned also to the private market and to create sets of games for parents and their children. It turns out that not few sociologists and psychologists believe the problem nowadays is that parents are unable to find away to be with their children who are always busy sitting in front of the computer or the television; and not only this, but also many parents are frustrated with their own inability to bond with their children, to spend quality time with them and to encourage their studies. "The use of games, encourages the use of language, raises motivation, challenges children and reduces the existing pressures for children with learning difficulties, and this, in fact, is an additional benefit of the English learning games. Learning a compulsory language in an experiential and enjoyable way helps to strengthen the bond between parents and their children." summarizes Galit.
Zohar and Galit have a strong belief that their initiative ZigZag Language Games is a bridge to English and that English is a bridge to the world. Galit and Zohar took their method of teaching with the help of games one step forward. They lead workshops for teachers and education students all over the country. Considering the deterioration of diligence and achievement of pupils in English in the recent past, likewise the status of the teaching profession continues to deteriorate. It is refreshing and encouraging to meet two teachers with vision. They are on a mission to show and encourage the love of teaching and return the achievements of Israeli pupils to the level they once were.

Anyone know where to find these pictures?
This will sound a bit weird, but please bear with me. Awhile ago a friend of mine showed me some framed picture prints that could be ordered online (site unknown) and they were professionally done pictures of rabbit/squirrel/etc wearing top hats/monocles/other dressy items. I'm thinking they were 3x5'ish or thereabouts. I'm realllly interested in finding them, but am unable to. Any help at all would be greatly appreciated!
And as for any suggestions on using a search engine to try and locate them, I've used multiple different words and phrases in attempts to locate them on my own. But was unable to find anything remotely near what I'm trying to find. This handbag is rather close to what the pictures resemble, to give anybody an idea of what I'm looking for.
