What is lithographic printing?
The litho printing principle is in essence, a very simple process. It was invented in the 18th Century and initially, the image that needed to be printed would be etched onto a stone. After applying ink to the stone, it would be pressed onto a sheet of paper which transferred the image. Water is placed on the non-print areas of the paper to make it ink-repellent; this is because water repels oil. Doing so considerably aids the achievement of the neat transfer of the image to the sheet of paper that litho printing is famous for.
Although the sophisticated presses around today are highly advanced compared to the older technology, the principles are still exactly the same. Now the stones have been replaced by more innovative printing plates however there are still a great deal of good points to using this traditional form of printing.
One advantage is the extremely high quality finish that litho printing provides. Not only does the press have the ability to perfect the print but also produce precise colour reproduction using pantone colour key references. This wonderful ability makes litho printing fantastic for corporate stationary and other documents where highly accurate reproduction is essential. The print run is also surprisingly fast; at first colour our five colour press will produce 15,000 colour A3 sheets per hour. However one drawback is that the press can take a long time to set up.
However the litho printing option is not appropriate for all print jobs. Litho printing requires a clear two day period, this is because it uses ‘real ink'. The extended set up time can also result in it being uneconomical to produce short print runs; therefore it is important to consult your printer in order to decide upon the suitability of litho printing. In the case that litho printing is not suitable for your job, digital printing can be used instead. This offers a lot more speed and flexibility. I have recently acquired two lithographs by Renoir and I can not find their likeness on the internet.?
I purchased two lithographs by renoir and I am trying to find their title.
1) Black and white portrait of a young female child wearing a traditional dutch bonnet with wings. Signed in the stone.
2) What appears to be very similar to Le Petit Garcon au Porte Plume
it is also black and white but the child in my litho has more detail and looks older but pose is extremely similar. Signed in pencil lower left.
Printings appear to be on Arches paper (thick and creamy). Any information would be greatly appreciated. The size of the paper is roughly 25 x 30 cm. Thank you.
