It would save the Navy a ton of money if it stopped paying for the up-keep of that old wooden relic.
You guys do realize that President Teddy Roosevelt wanted the USS CONSTITUTION scrapped just as any other obsolete naval vessel?
Uh... no. It more than makes up its costs by being a recruiting and public relations tool, a source of national and local pride, a teaching venue. Every day the crew gives free tours and conducts educational programs. The upkeep is part of the training and team building experience. Every summer, CPO selectees come and learn military history and leadership skills. It's an honor to attend.
The ship oozes patriotism and national pride. Plus they fire the guns every night at sunset. Very cool.
